I know this should probably be in the Tech area but more people read the lounge...

I need to FTP some files to a server. I am using XP, and with a FTP program and with IE I can't get access.. I have the user/password but it seems like my router or computer is blocking the returning data..?

I have McAfee and have disabled it completly but something is still blocking.

'Lil help?

sort of..

in IE, I type ftp://dev.southseattle.edu
Then it opens a dialog box asking for my user name/pass.

when using a FTP program, I fill in the text boxes with the info it's asking for...

oops, I didn't read your thread fully so I killed my response.

So the system just hangs there, waiting for the ftp server? If you wait long enouigh, does it return a time out?

It sounds like the directory protections are not set correctly.

That's why you can't get a listing of files.

Or if you can list the files but not download them, possibly the execute bit is not set on the directory.

Either way, it sounds like a problem on their end.

It's for a class assignment. the instructor says he can FTP with my user/pass and I know other students are uploading fine. So it's not their end....

I hope someone can divine the problem. Frankly, I could probably diagnose the problem in a minute if you gave me your password....

Status: Connected
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is the current directory
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Type Binary
Command: PASV
Error: Disconnected from server
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

Something similar to that?

Do you have an option of putting your ftp proggy into "active" mode instead of passive?

Are you on a router? Maybe try bypassing the router and connecting directly.

Maybe you have to set the BINARY option. I don't use PC versions of FTP, but try the command "bin".

it's possible they could've turned off ftp (it's not secure at all); install putty & try scp - easy peasy
