That looks bad ass, My buddy Mark builds bomb proof VW bus 901 transaxles (http://www.markssandtrans.com)
but he got away from the VW powerplants once he played with a turbo Honda based rail. I could see getting him to build me a Corvette LS based rail to race.

Braaaaaap

Something like that would probably be a Class 1? There's so many classes it's tough for me to keep them straight these days. And seriously, let me know when I can come pick up your brother-in-laws '69. ;)

I'll be there at thanksgiving, I'll snap some pics. He picked it up for the dunes and has never even gotten it running (I honestly don't think he has tried). It's down by Eugene.

If it was a Matchbox or some other kind of die cast car, I totally would have. But slot car? Not sure I’d have a use for that. Not that I'd have a use for a Matchbox car either, I suppose.

Hey Evan,

I happen to have a Ducati Supersport to use as a donor for a transplant and was thinking of doing a tube chassis long travel fiberglass VW bug shell car for a dune toy.

I am thinking of finding a bug to tear down and start making a jig with and swap the vin over so I can keep it road legal, is there a specific year or sub model I should be on the lookout for?

Man, I'm not sure I'm the guy to answer this to be honest. I'd suspect it kind depends on what all you want or need to salvage from the donor bug itself. I think a lot of the tube chassis have a front beam (and maybe trailing arms?) from a bug, not sure what else is pulled from the car when building a tube chassis car. I'll ping the other guys on the team to see what they think, there's a couple of guys that really know bugs that might have a better idea. Also, there's a pile of forums out there for this question...

all I plan to use the donor car for is keeping the vin and locating tabs and basic geometry, I am betting 90% of the original car will scrapped

So the finished tube car will look like a bug then? Same size (ish) and all that? Probably anything would work then. Might want to have a look at the different rear suspension styles to see if there's anything absurdly different in geometry that would affect what you're building.

Front suspension is gonna be a torsion bar/beam, unless you get a Superbeetle. I don't really know why, but it seems like most people stay away from the Superbeetle. At least, for Class 11 which is all I really know anything about... and I don't know much.

Rear suspension is either IRS or swing axle. Ours was IRS, though I know there were/are definitely swing axle cars out on the race course. I don't think it matters either way, assuming you're gonna be rebuilding / fabricating new suspension anyways.'

So yeah man, go find a rolling chassis and get it done!

As ive been sick as a dog and stuck in the recliner I have been going over several options the more I learn as I surf the builds out there.

Seems there are 2 camps when it comes to baja bugs,

those whom keep the suspension and tweak as much as possible,

and those who just go long travel from scratch. I would rather forgo the beam and pan and stick with tube chassis so that leaves the concern that there are no fiberglass body parts other than hood, fenders, trunk lid, ect and you still have to retain the weight of the body and pan.

and in that direction I have found two styles of street legal builds that appeal to me but still leaves a heavy car.

you have the minimal approach such as this build
Stripped, no floor, cheap parts and made to flog and repair but works, may have resale value but still heavy in comparison to a sand car

Or you have the top end build such as this
I dig the look and daily drivability but its heavy and requires a ton of HP to make it perform accordingly on the sand but will have some real resale value.

Still kinda learning on what I could use as a street legal long travel sand car but the bug is the most viable choice thus far, not a fan of the manx, or fiberglass tub body cars.

The body is basically 4 bolts to the pan. If you are doing tube, you just need 4 body mounts and you are done. You could do any number of tubular a arms and trailing arms like long travel pre runner setups. Get a bus 901 from my buddy Mark in Forest Grove (Mark's Sandy Trans).

He built amazing VW based rails for years. Then he found a Typhoon V6 in the junkyard and got crazy into turbos. Now he builds Honda based monster turbo setups. I worked with his wife back in '99. He's been building bombproof sand gearboxes since before that.
