From the NY Times

What’s worse, by granting this right to individuals, the law strips the public of its right to occupy public spaces without the threat of being shot. The police are trained to handle guns. The criminals know they’re not supposed to have them but find them easy to get, thanks to the N.R.A. Let them fight it out. No one is safer if gun-carrying civilians believe their rights entitle them to pretend they’re cops.
And by outlawing guns, then I will never be shot in a public space...

you´d be less likely to be shot in a public space if there are fewer guns.

less guns = less shots shot.
The real question is whether gun control truly equals less guns.

Pro-gun people will show you the stats pointing to the fact that legit concealed carry permit holders rarely shoot anyone, and if they do, it's typically in defense of themselves or another against an armed aggressor. And criminals who use or carry guns illegally will ignore any and all gun-control laws.

(Rational) anti-gun people (as opposed to hysterical ones, of which there are plenty) will point out that the same laws which allow legit handgun owners to own guns make it easy for non-legit gun owners to procure guns. ("straw purchases" and the like...generally, guns are purchased by a legal purchaser, then re-sold for illegitimate purposes...SIG and HK don't sell them off the back dock...)

In either case, controlling the guns is a treatment of the symptoms...reducing crime in the long term is ultimately a matter of creating more positive social conditions. That's why I tend to be more towards the pro-gun standpoint...simply because I see rabid anti-gun feeling as a misguided, knee-jerk attempt to focus anger and fear onto 1) inanimate objects and 2) people whom society can control. Alas, those aren't the people society needs to be worried about in the first place...law-abiding citizens abide laws, with or without guns.

Not to say you shouldn't treat symptoms, but you shouldn't let that sidetrack your search for a real cure.

PS I can't wait until someone publishes that bogus Australian pro-gun chain email...I give it a day...

that's usually my main complaint, as illegal guns rarely start out that way. I'd love to see statistics as to how many guns used in crimes were legal at some point, obtained through straw buyers, pawn shops, stolen, etc. if it was less than 97-98% I'd be shocked.

That is a loaded question. Every gun is legal at some point.

I think he means entered circulation in the US through a legal purchase by a private citizen, vs, say, being stolen before purchase or smuggled across the border

Front Range, dude...
The thing that anti gunners neglect to realize, it that gun control will not stop criminals (i.e illegal gun owners) from owning guns in the first place.
I would agree with dante about the % of legal vs. illegal guns used in the commission of a crime. I know the NRA (!) tracks such stats, and if you will trust their numbers, it has to be close.
What gets me, as a legal gun owner, is the kooks who decry the waiting periods. When I buy a new firearm, I research it thouroughly, and look for the best deal, $$wise. I have already waited, and dont need the weapon to whack my best exfreind,or knock over a liquor store, and I already have enough for my next hunting trip, soooo why not wait?

And why does Joe Bagadonuts need an assault rifle anyway? Or a machine gun? High capacity magazines? Get trained in reloading drills, and learn to throw alot of lead downrange really fast, which, along with actually hitting your intended target, is generally recognized as the key to winning a gunfight. Be it with a crackhead, the Taliban, or some helpless bunny rabbit...
