Maybe you need to transcend your narrow-mindedness. MOST of the active personnel in the military are low ranking, so your $40K a year is a laughable "average".
Oh I see, so this means they should get a special discount? They make more than my paperboy (35 year old man who works 6 hours a day delivering papers), so they should get some special discount for doing a job they chose? They knew the pay scale when they enlisted.

Please.

Yup, keep serving yourself.

I actually feel sorry for people like you.

Actually, most people enlist for the benefits. The many "military discounts" out there are certainly a benefit. Also, many people view serving in the military as a sacrifice, so helping out people who sacrifice by giving discounts is generally a pretty acceptable thing to do.

C'mon now. Is your paperboy based in Afghanistan? Is his route thru Basra?

Now, I know as a Canadian, you have no appreciation of what it takes to preserve freedom around the world. While our attempts to restore justice to Iraq is totally misdirected, I don't fault the soldiers.

You might argue that only a small percentage of American troops have served in a war zone, but neverthless anyone in the military has done a bit more than I have to protect our country.

If a private company wants to give a discount, I have no problem with that.

Sure, a very small portion of troops actually serve in harms way. Those ones receive hazard / deployment pay and bonuses.

And ya, sure, Canada isn't in Afghanistan, wasn't in Dday and never went to Kosovo, Korea or anywhere else.

Hazardous duty pay is about $200 a month. That's a real big incentive. At least its not taxable.

I'll make this easy for you. Quit being a dumbass.

I wonder what the average income for a 20 year old is. I'm sure a military income isn't that far off of the norm especially when considering benefits. Traditionaly there have been jobs that are just as essential to the safety and wellbeing of this country as the military. Coal miners have always had a higher mortality rate than someone in the military even during WWII. This country wouldn't run so well without coal. Not to disrespect anyone in the military, it seems we have learned our lessons (socially at least) from VietNam and that is a good thing.

Of course a company has the right to give anyone they want a discount just as manufacturers have to right to choose who their distributors are.

According to Ann Coulter, you are lucky to be on the continent.

Seriously, though; do you think an extra $1000 a month is worth being shot at?

Frankly, you can be really cynical and claim that military discounts is just a way to play the patriotic card, which I wouldn't deny. They don't give discounts to Greenpeace or Amnesty International members...

Of course not, but you'll notice i didn't make a choice to take up a carreer where I would stand the chance of being shot at.

And I'd agree that that is all it is as well. I find it funny that military personnel think they deserve something extra for choosing that carreer path.

edit: I taipe gud

maybe they get the "discount" not because the business thinks they deserve it, but rather pure marketing, like the retailer wants to penetrate the specific market??

Just because you personally hold the military in high esteem doesn't mean everyone have to. I'd personally be far more impressed if they gave discounts to nurses and teachers, for example.

Who gives a **** what impresses you? It's done as an act of patriotism, not charity. Nurses make plenty of money and teachers get summers off. They can kiss my ass.

word to that. i respect the military(to an extent), but i don't think they truly deserve more benefits than a teacher.

A true act of patriotism would be to take those golf clubs they're giving away and stick them up the collective asses of the administration, head-end first. Bush gets the oversize driver.

Where did military personnel go knocking on the door of Ping asking for discounts? I missed that part.
