Melvin’s comments led Sen. David Bradley, D-Tucson, to ask him whether he’s actually read the Common Core standards, which have been adopted by 45 states.

“I’ve been exposed to them,” Melvin responded.

Pressed by Bradley for specifics, Melvin said he understands “some of the reading material is borderline pornographic.” And he said the program uses “fuzzy math,” substituting letters for numbers in some examples.

As per usual, Republitards oppose education. Keep the populace ignorant, irrationaly fearful, and heavily armed. Makes for an obediant constituency.
isn't that cute: you think one party owns teh stupid

do i really have to trot out the over-the-horizon line of stories *just* from california, where their education system is from a singular voice & party?

tell me what you know about common core, what it's replacing/augmenting, and why it may or may not be a good idea.

you know: an informed opinion

I don't know what the common standards are replacing in each state (probably hokum and creationist textbooks, I'm guessing), but from their own admittedly biased FAQ they sound reasonable:

I don't get what the whole uproar is about. A suggested reading list by grade level! My gawd, communism!

seems to me most of the knee-jerk uproar (vice legitimately structured concerns) is borne out of home-schoolers / cottage / college pathways types, and i see some merits, but also see where temperance should be exercised. if the home-schoolers believe in themselves & how they're partnered in a manner where education is compliant *and* fruitful, they should embrace this as an opportunity to evangelize their cause.

my concern is this drives mediocrity, and not innovation. i also believe it [indirectly] enables poor parenting, or at least ignores / fails to consider that as a significant issue that should *first* be addressed (or at least in parallel)

and of course, this smacks of throwing good money after bad, with echoes of 'waiting for superman' ringing out

It would have been great if Melvin had done that instead of complaining that kids will have to do more than just count with their hands. I have to admit that Melvin did not appear to know the term variables and even equated it to pornography on his scale of horrors is quite amusing to me. Anyway, there is always merit to discussing what is wrong with the current system before changing it, but Melvin's "contributions" don't seem to add up to anything (even if I use my hands to help counting).

Edit: I know nothing about the "common core" and actually have no idea of whether it makes sense. But, I do have an issue with backwards or ignorant comments. Neither side of the aisle has a monopoly on those though.

I agree about parental involvement. I don't think a common curriculum has much to do with it, on the other hand. It's a culture thing, and that's not taught/instilled in the school system.
