On a hunch I tried this over the weekend. Shimano never changes anything drastically, even when they redesign parts. When I heard the Saint derial was designed for a 10 mm axle, smart bet was they were using the same 10mm x 1 thd every Shimano rear hub axle runs. To do this you will need a longer 10mm x 1 axle, hollow or solid; your choice - Wheels Manufacturing makes several different ones, and you need 1 axle nut for the non drive side.

I'll take a pic at lunch time and post.

I think I've seen this done before, but the only drama is you have to remove the derailleur completely before taking off the wheel, yeh? Which could mean a minor bit of wrestling with the chain to do so.

Yeah, you have to take the derailleur off, to remove the wheel. Not that big of a pain, you would need to do the same for any Saint setup.

this came up before, but i'd be afraid you couldn't get the proper axle preload this way since everything is tied in, ie. knurled nuts vs the dropout vs torquing the axle into the derailler. Looks like a real pain, better off buying a good thru-axle hub (not Saint).

I don't see how this is any different than using a Saint hub. I agree that it would be easy to strip out the der thread by overtightening the axle nut in an effort to keep the hub from slipping. However, using a Saint hub or any other hub wouldn't change this.
Good job Rockland. I'm in a bit of an anti-shimano funk right now but I can see how this could be an easy, cheap fix for a bike with a trashed der hanger

I agree that the thru axle (for conventional dropouts; I'll get into this in a second) is a more sano set-up. But I have no reservations about how secure it is currently.

If anyone was waiting for Hadley or others to come out with Saint axles for DH applications (wider spacings, clamped thru axle) might run into some trouble. For the derailleur to end up in the appropriate location, so it will shift properly, the outside face of the dropout must be even with the face of the hanger. How many DH bikes with clamped axles are like this?
