These type of operations take a long time to plan, train for and execute. The amount of moving parts in such a thing are many...Special Operators train for years to attain the skillsets needed to do such things. They are not easily found and trained, and are hard to replace. RiP Chief Owens.

An interview with one of my former classmates at UW. Can't say we were close friends but we did share beers and cheesy high fives at ME department happy hours. She is a brilliant and rad chick. She has invested a decade in academics with the hopes of employment in the US. The kind of person that would benefit US interests as she would have been an ambassador to Iran for the American way of life. If things continue on the current path she has few choices but to return home, angry and bitter.

For those that would claim that she is stealing Americans jobs, she is just smarter and works harder than you. American industry has lost a brilliant mind.

well, having been a foreign student in the US (an ME too btw) that decided to return after school, I´d say I would not bother if I was her.

Canada is actually a much nicer place to live (specially for non-whites), and immigration is pretty much straightforward for educated types; a fellow peruvian friend, with a graduate degree from Carnagie Mellon got a work visa in a matter of weeks.

Europe (as in the non-run down places) is pretty cool too, 2 other high-school friends of mine went to ETH Zurich and KU Leuven and stayed there; Their lifestyles (we are all now in our mid-30s) are pretty relaxed and laid back (lots of vacations, travelling and good healthcare), lifestyles which are not very common (or easy to get) in the States

I´ve been a couple times on business and putting some actual work hours in Germany for a few days; and the work-life balance and city layouts/mass transit/ammenities make it a pretty kick-ass living place.
If I were to emigrate, I´d try those place first... the states is a hard place to go if you try to earn a middle/upper-middle class lifestyle as a inmigrant on a salary.

btw; I´d like to retire in Fairhope, Alabama, or some small bucolic town in the gulf coast... so Its not like I dont like the states... its just that is not a country for people living on a wage anymore; labor laws, work-life balance suck; plus healthcare and higher education are ridiculously expensive (if you are of child-bearing age).

Money aint everything amigo...to me, quality of life is far more important. No one has ever had "Wish I had worked more..." as an epitath.

I agree, and I agree that for most people that quality of life is lacking. I'm personally eyeing a job switch to make a bit more but also get 10 weeks off (with the option for more for correspondingly less pay if desired). That'd be killer.

well, the world has changed a lot in the last 15 years,
the internet and globalization have shaped the drivers for immigration.

it used to be people emigrated to get more money, or improve their life quality... and the US was the go-to place... its cheap-ish to get there and most people in this side of the pond are somewhat familiar with the states (thanks Hollywood!), or alredy had a friend/family there, helping them navigate the red tape and settling.. thus it became the default place to immigrate thru the 70s-90s...

now, globalization and foreign investment have created lots of quality jobs outside the US/Europe; and cost-of-living in the US has increased much faster than wages (more so for low-skill jobs); making immigration less attractive.
and, thanks to the internet, the cost-of-research has come down considerably, making it cheaper/easier for would-be immigrants to research other destinations than the US.
