I have to true a wheel that was messed up in a crash, and im usualy pretty good at this, but i cant get it straight no matter what. I was thinking of loosening all the spokes off alot so its completly loose, then starting over, or (plan B) detatch the rim entirly and get that as straight as i can, then start from scratch and put it together. What do you guys recomend?

Side question:when is a rim tocoed, and not just bent?

It sounds as though your rim is toast. As soon as the tension is not uniform, the wheel is much weaker than it should be. If you have to dramatically loosen/tighten spokes to try to get it true, your rim is bent and needs to be replaced.

If you're even thinking about taking the wheel apart to "straighten" the rim (I assume this will involve beating it into submission), you need a new rim, and spokes while you're at it.

A tacoed rim just means an extremely bent rim, kind of folded together like a taco.

Tacoed is a relative term. You have your standar hard taco shell, but then there is also the soft taco shell, which can be laid flat.
A bent rim is bad no matter what. Any way you look at it, the rim is dunn.
