found 3 of the 6 i had on my list...i dont have a GPS yet so i have been using google earth as my only guide. Near one of them i couldnt find i came across a 4 foot long red and black snake....needless to say i would come back to that one another day

for those of you who dont know what geocaching is, people take a container (commonly altoids boxes or tupperware) and put a log in it to write that you found it, and small trinkets. THey put it somewhere and put the longitude and latitude on this website. You go on there and go out with your gps and find them! You sign the log, take something from the box and put something back in. Its pretty cool because they are everywhere!!!!!!!!!! if you go to http://www.geocaching.com/ you can put in your zip and see all of them nearby. im going out tommorow with 9 more all within 2 blocks of each other.

Crazy thing is 1 of the ones i found today i ride by every day at least 10 times on my bike!

I've heard of this. A man came into the bike shop some time ago and was telling me about his adventures with the geocache. Sounded really fun! He said you kind of feel like a kid on a tresure hunt again. :thumb: I have yet to try it though - thanks for the reminder.

i have done it! it was actually a lot of fun! there was some cool **** in the cases... I have heard that magellan goes around and puts brand new gps units in or next to a bunch of em every year.. could be anywhere.. and i think that it origionally started that you would place survival items in there like matches, compasses maps of the area etc... so if someone were lost and found it, they could survive.. thats what i was told, anyway.. mostly just small trinkets and junk now though...... its kinda fun if you just want to be outdoors and goof around...

You could do quite a fun mountain bike orientering race useing GPS.... This might be worth a bit of further though I think.

Hey how about...... At each GPS co-ordinate Stash a different type of beer, object being to get to the finish line with All the different types of beer and then have a BBQ and drinks with them.

hahaha DaveW thats a good idea.. im in a mustang car club and we have poker runs, where you stop at 5 stops over maybe 30 miles (not racing , just as a cruise) and each deck is a different color and marked when you pick up your hand, and at the final 6th stop (usually a park) we have a bbq and everyone plays their poker hand and best hand wins the pot...Last time it was 10 dollar buy in and we had 30 cars, so a 300 dollar pot aint bad on a single hand of poker + free food + hanging out with your buds all day :)

I've run into these people while working out in the field before... My opinion is that geocaching is for people who have nothing better to do with their GPS unit.

Did a few myself to see what it was all about. It adds a little something more to going for a hike. And in times like these where most people just sit in front of their tv's their whole life...

Good activity for kid/family stuff as well. Though i don't have any kids.

One thing I learned though: Geocaching and the people I ride with don't mix - I jumped off my bike mid ride and started running around the woods looking for one and got all sorts of nasty looks ;) But thats just my experience.

Looking at that avatar, seems like it might be right on the money.
wow, i didn't know that people were that sensitive! I will change it so as not to disturb any more of you! I hope that it makes for a less disturbing experience for you while surfing the internet!

Sensitive? Yes that is a word that most folks on Ridemonkey would attribute to me.
