My frame was slightly ovalized a while back. I bought an FSA pig deep-cup headset for it and it worked perfectly. Now I need to get them out. Ive tried the two headset cup removers we have at the shop and neither of them made the cups budge. I tried hitting them out from the inside too with a screwdriver and hammer. Wont budge either. Anyone have any experience with getting deep cups out or any suggestions? Thanks

going to have to cut it out.....

couple questions...

how long ago is "a while back"?
did you grease the cups before installation?

Is there somebody at the shop who doesn't have little girly arms and knows how to swing a hammer?

last question:

Why are you even bothering to remove the headset?

Ive had it in for about two years. Yes i greased them before installing it. Ive been hitting the tool as hard as possible until it shoots through the cup to the ground. Im taking them out because im painting the frame. Im just gonna keep them in and carefully tape off the cups if i cant get them out. just wanted to see if anyone had some suggestions to take them out to make it easier to paint. thanks

try flaring your headset removal tool a bit sounds like its not catching on the cup or using a screwdriver perpendicular to the headset cup. then alternate sides to push the cup out evenly.

if its not budging it might be stuck now or maybe try a bigger hammer.

You probably jammed the headset in there pretty good if your headtube was ovalized. Was the headtube sized for the long insertion of the cups? If not, you might have just smashed it all together with no hope of getting the cups out in one piece. If you can find a punch of the right size, it might help. But no matter what you do, you're going to have to hit it hard, and when you hit things that hard, they're probably going to break, warp, or deform, thus making this operation not worth your time. Mask off the headset.

:stupid:

Was the original frame reamed for the long insertion?
There's a good chance you're not getting it out without significant damage to both the headset & the frame.
