hey, what's a good gift for typical kids. I'd like to spend ~$40 for the 12 yo boy and half that for the 8yo girl.

TIA!

Hard to tell when you don't know what they are into.

For the boy...assuming he has a Gameboy you could always get him a new game. They run about $30.

The girl...just go to Target or Wal Mart and take a look in the Toys. you will find something. I have a niece around that age that likes games, which are cool as long as there is someone that will play her. Otherwise go for something Barbie.

My sister is 8 years old. For Christmas I went to Walmart and bought her this little game called 20 Questions. Its a little electronic thing that guesses an object of your choice based on 20 Questions. She, and everyone else that has played it love it, you couldn't go wrong with that and its only 10 bucks.

Legos are always fun...you definitely can't go wrong with those. I see a lot of my students (girls) with those Brat dolls...I have not a clue about them, but know that they seem to like them (I guess they're the hip & up-to-date barbies).
