So everyone is talking about gas now, i am thinking about cars... so

Audi A3 TFSI 2lt turbo 200PS 9.5lt/100km, 0-60 in 6.9sec
VW Golf GTI 2lt turbo 200PS 9lt/100km, 0-60 in 6.7sec
Subaru Impreza WRX 2lt turbo 225ps, 0-60 in 5.9sec
Subaru Impreza WRX Sti 2lt turbo 265ps 0-60 in 5.3sec.

What do you reckon would be the most sensible choice?

depends on your definition of 'sensible' :)

in regards to gas and MPG /???
Not needing service every 2 miles due to specialist engine requirements.

Not having a consumption of more than 11-12lt/100km on avg.

thats about it.

I would slam an Sti hands down, but... fuel cons is 17lt/100km and it requires servicing every 5000miles.

so Subaru WRX and not Sti right?
More reliable than the VW and Audi, more sensible than the STi. Actually as a WRX owner I'd just say go for the regular old Imprezza.

Westy, i really want something with at least 200ps and 0-60sec in 7sec tops. Whats your take on the WRX? 2lt turbo right? avg mpg? Servicing? does the clutch and gearbox support (reliability wise) the claimed acceleration figures?

Your best bet is a VW anything TDI, the new Jetta's get around 40mpg and are very audi like in the interior, nice optios as well. Since I work for VW/AUDI I was thinknig about getting one although I'm not a fan of the looks or just wait for a MKV GTI.

TDIs get great mileage, and are dog slow.
If you're not worried about losing warrenty or work on your own car you can get them chipped and swap out the injectors, you'll be making alittle more than a stock VR6 (170-180whp) but you'll have around 300 tq and still get 39+mpg. There are way to get a chip and keep warrenty (buy another ecu or chip switchers are inexpensive and the dealer will never know!)

Im partial to the GTI i have a 24v '03, its a blast to drive and have had zero problems 57000 miles. Changed oil (synthetic is a must) and 2 tires. I personally cant stand subarus i know im out numbered but fukital. I have heard problems with the turbos in all of these cars, usually when people start tweaking the engine. The TDI is also a pretty kick ass motor and the new ones arent quite as doggy as before.

Thing in the UK is.

A3 has the cheapest insurance and costier spare parts
Golf has higher insurance, but better performance and mpg than the A3 since they share the same engine yet the golf is 200kg lighter.
Subaru has even higher insurance than the Golf or A3, similar MPG to the Golf/A3 slightly higher, and i presume cheaper spare parts and servicing alongside better mechanical parts and performance.

I would have to go with the Golf or A3. They are superior engineering to the Subaru (not that the Subaru is bad, just that VW and Audi are some of the absolute best). Your rational brain says Golf but your ego says Audi. I dunno, they are both similar, superb cars. Go on fuel economy.

audi is going to be $$$ to fix, i went through this same debate in may when I got out of school and bought a car. My options were:

2004 Subaru STI
2001-2002 Audi S4 in that kickass neggaro blue color
2003 Jetta vr6 6speed

-the sti just didnt have any styling, and i was looking for a bit more than the rice look, i mean dont get me wrong the thing was badass, i just felt it was missing something

-the s4 had all kinds of problems according to audi reviews, and insurance was through the roof

-ended up with the jetta vr6 because i got a good warranty, low miles, and a pretty fast car (not as fast as the rest) for less than the audi and a hell of a lot less than the subaru...

That said the audi will cost a ton to fix, but i would prob go with that if you are in europe, maybe look into diesel, i mean the cost of gas over there is insane :dead:

It depends on how and where you drive. In stop and go traffic the WRX isn't that much fun, no low end torque means either an anemiv initial launch or your slipping the clutch. Slipping clutches wear out quickly. If you drive mainly swoopy backroads or highways it is a flipping blast. The tranny is the weakpoint, If you shift like a normal human being you should be fine. If you keep your right foot planted or try to slam shifts as fast as you can, you might want to look elsewhere. I can get from 19-32 miles per gallon depending on where and how I drive, 19 for heavy footed city use 32 on the highway.

Correction the 1.8t has few problems (common being coil packs and window regulators) and the S4 (A 2.7 liter) has many, many problems if you're not treating it like a god.

IMO the MKIV totally distroyed VW/Audis reliablility. We had three of them in my family as well as three other friends with them
Wife's 02 20v GTI #1 -recalled ignition coils, coolant reservoir started to leak for no apparent reason, made probalby 2-3 other stops to dealer for other things. traded in for a new GTI after 30k. extremly pitted windsheild from normal road driving
Wife's 04 20v GTI #2 -radio cuts in and out, hardly ever can keep reception. windsheild washer reservoir has a crack in it. car currently at 17k miles
my 01 20v jetta -extremely pitted windsheild. had car in a different area than other two so roads are not an issue. got rid of it becaue of the ignition pack thing
friends 00 12v jetta -window regulators failed x3
other friends 01 20v WOB jetta - window regulator failed x2, above coil pack issue.
other friends 01 20v passat -coil pack thing
these five cars were just a microcosm of the A4 and B5.5 platforms. These problems were wide spread throughout the entire range of VAG. I loved driving my jetta and wifes gtis, but we will never buy another VAG car again.
if you really want a VAG car, get an A3 or A2, they were much more reliable
