GM to stop production at 4 North America factories
Tuesday June 3, 8:37 am ET
GM to stop production at 4 factories and may announce job cuts before annual meeting

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- General Motors said Tuesday it will close four truck and SUV plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico as surging fuel prices hasten a dramatic shift to smaller vehicles

CEO Rick Wagoner said before the automaker's annual meeting it will cease production at a full-size pickup factory in Oshawa, Ontario. It also will stop making SUVs at factories in Moraine, Ohio, and Janesville, Wis., and it will stop making mid-size pickups in Toluca, Mexico.

He also said the Hummer brand may be discontinued.

Wagoner announced the moves in response to slumping sales of pickups and SUVs brought on by high oil prices. He says a market shift to smaller vehicles is permanent.

Wagoner said the company will build a new small car in Lordstown, Ohio, in mid-2010. And it will add shifts at car plants in Lordstown and Orion Township, Mich.

as much as i would love love love to never see another H2 on the mean streets of suburbia, to discontinue this line is a bad idea. there will always be a market for the most attention getting goods.

example: a buddy of mine bought an '08 last week w/ all the fixins ($57,380) on behalf of a buddy of his in AZ (taxes here are far less). the AZ guy heavily mods them & sells them to who? NBA players & other 20-something "VIPs". just think: i'm one of only 3 white guys who will ever see the inside.

not sure if up-armoring is an available option.

I don't give a damn who buys them, they are a waste in more ways than one. I'm glad to see GM drop them.

For military use, they are great. For suburbia, they are not.

Just send it to Colombia...they have a package there for VIP's that adds around 2 tons of armor plating, "glass" that can take a .50 cal round, and tires that laugh at IED's...You might be getting 3 gallons to the mile by the time all is said and done...but at least you won't end up like Tupac.

And the cops will have an easier time pulling you over because you can't go 90mph while puffing a blunt on I5 (Rasheed Wallace).

Hummer owners are like the guy that dresses up in a purple velvet pimp suit and top-hat and then gets all uppity and self-righteous when people think he's a jackass... "you're judging me based on my appearance" "I can spend my money however I want"

Although to make the analogy truly appropriate the pimp suit should be a significant danger to the health and safety of anyone in normal clothes, and should take up two seats on planes or at the movie theatre.

Actually, no they are not, just smaller on the inside.
length width height
Durango 200.8" 76.0" 74.3"
Hummer H3 186.7" 85.5" 73.7"

Even if the Dodge is larger and gets worse mileage(depends on engine) the Hummer is just the symbol of American selfeshness and ignorance. I'm glad that useless POS is going away.

Yup, I rented one for a week for ****s and giggles while on a consulting gig back when they first came out. What a worthless pile of carp. To be fair having to make payments on it and being forced to drive it around is probably punishment enough for being a douchebag without even factoring in the keying.

Terrible mileage, no space inside, if you're over 6' you can't see out the windshield without stooping, AND it looks like a pimp-suit (see previous).

It's not. I know one organization which now owns 12 H2s it can't do a damned thing with and can't get rid of.

It was fun to drive one around San Francisco, though, just to count the scowls, fingers, and other mellow hippie goodness.

hahahha, just looked out the hotel window, there's a no **** purple one park right by the door, straddling two parking spots.

And a Hummer owner might wonder why they get keyed....:disgust:

Only the finest American engineering could fit so small a space into so large a box. It's like the reverse of Dr. Who's Tardis.

If you're designing a product specifically to make the emotionally weak feel large and powerful, what could make them feel bigger than being so cramped in such a giant sh!tbox?

Because products built to accomplish an awesome goal are the same as products poorly designed to fulfill a certain aesthetic while being completely inadequate to the implied task...

If you gotta get somewhere offroad, a stripped/military H1 is awesome. H2s are not good vehicles, on the road or off.

uh please explain...because I can't see an XC bike doing what a DH bike can do but I can definitely see a number of more intelligently designed cars replacing the Hummer...D
a H2 will get farther than a Corolla on an off-road trail, even if the Corolla is a far better car for the realistic usage that each will see.

nothing could ever replace the hummer......

for a post-prom "thank you" ;) :D

side note: i think i'm going to put hummer decals on my beat up subaru. maybe paint H4 on the side or something since it's almost as capable of an off-roader as the H3. after all...i did get 28mpg at the last fill-up and it's 14 years old :thumb:

Also FJ Cruiser shares more similarities with the H3 than the real FJ40. Another marketing piece:twitch:

So which vehicle is more worthless or are they equally bad considering your friend has one to compare with:busted:
