is it just lubricant? i had a crapload come out today (2nd day after getting bike) so i was wondering if its good or bad? Also, when you take a jump, and the front shock locks out in the air, thats not bad is it? LIke when it gets locked out all the sudden? Sorry for the newb questions but i want to make sure i dont break this bike

What do you mean locks out in the air? And by goop, do you mean oil? What fork are we dealing with? This should prolly be in the DH or tech forums...

its thick, like a dark colored petroleum jelly look....its a spinner ammo fork, and i mean like is it bad when the shock is compressed as if im riding, and then when u take off in the air it fully extends in the air quickly making a thud once its all the way out....does that make sense?

You know that is a cheapo fork, right? Spinner doesn't even list a phone number for service on their website...

i never said it was a good or bad fork, i just want to know what that crap is?
Well, I am pointing out that a cheapo fork is not going to hold up at all, and could possibly be leaking oil (or whatever is lubing the internals) brand new.

There is no fix, just replace the fork.

Thick goop would be grease from assembly. Most new forks do that for a bit. If it continues, or gets runny (oil), you are in trouble.

I would buy an used Marzocchi Dirt Jumper. You can get them for under $100 on ebay, and those forks can be rebuilt with too much trouble.

That Spinner will never work as well.

i see where you are comming from sanjuro, just modding my 3 day old bike isnt high on my priority list right now. I have to finish paying off the financing on the bike i originally bought, plus get rid of my credit card debt from last semester and then i'll look into upgrades. i'll keep that shock in mind tho

The "fully extends in the air quickly making a thud once its all the way out" is the lack of a top out buffer. It's not a problem, just a lack of a feature most other more expensive forks have.

is ALWAYS key I say...
I got a Manitou Xvert dual crown and recently put some Manitou Prep M in mine and in one leg the Prep M is oozing out of the filler area and up the fork from the seals. I'm not worried too much about it. It's lubed. The other side it's not leaking but the other side is the oil side. And that isn't leaking. As to feeling it hit bottom when you launch, mine does the same thing. When you jump in the air, your fork is going to extend out all the way to full extension with no pressure on it. Especially if you compress it fully just prior to going off. It's pushing outward full force from total compression so when it reaches it's full length it's going to jult at the bottom. The fact I can feel mine hit the full extention isn't a problem, it just means the fork is all the way out and ready for a full five inches of travel. But like Sanjuro said, if the fork is a crappy fork, just look into another fork. Or try Pricepoint.com, cambriabike.com has a bunch, or performancebike.com. Check em all out. You might get a great closeout fork cheap.

I got my fork for $400 and it was $500. It was being discountinued. So a single crown you might find pretty cheap on a close out.

I figure the Prep M leaking from my tube is a worn seal that I can replace end of season. I've taken my fork apart for 8 years over the winter, clean it and relube it and add new fork oil. It's still holding up fine.

If you mean locking out in the air as in it goes all the way out and then doesn't compress when you hit, then you have a blown seal inside that needs to be fixed. The oil is traveling to one end of the tube and then can't come back. My Manitou had that happen once. I sent it back to Manitou and had it back in three weeks. They said it blew a seal and the oil could not travel back and forth.

ok its functioning fine thanks for clearing that up Chunky Munky...I ate crap yesterday tho because performance had to have rushed through putting it together because on my first drop my seat came loose and i fell back over the rear tire and then the front tire spun to the side while the handlebars were still straight launching me over them...i am so pissed at that ****ing shop right now....had to retighten everything on it, you'd be suprised even the bolt that holds the front wheels on was loose (like an allen key'd thing)..........ugh im glad the crash wasnt worse though, only got a minor scrape on my shin and arm...today i pick up my shin guards :)

Feeling the lag
A buddy of mine once forgot to fully tighten the bolts on the triple clamps of his dh forks - he sprinted across the car-park to this small jump and as soon as he hit the ramp the forks compressed and slid through the clamps, causing his front wheel to lock. The bike stopped dead and he flew over the jump head-first. He was absolutely fine and it's still one of the funniest things I've seen on mountain bikes.

Call: 1-800-POS-FORK.

Jensonusa has some deals on cheap forks that will serve you way better that that thing. Manitou Axel is really cheap yet way better. What did that fork come on?
