Hey guys, I'm getting a new dh bike, i'm going to be using it for freeriding, lots of whistler, and hopefully a couple dh races. I have everything picked out other than a few things. I'm not sure what brakes to get. and i'm not sure which rims to get. I'm going to be lacing them up to hadley hubs, and I would really prefer 32 hole rather than 36. I'm looking to keep my wheels fairly light weight, but still strong. I'm only 150 pounds and i would consider myself to be a fairly smooth rider. I was looking at mavic 823's, 729's and possibly something from sun, like their mtx's or whatever they're called. any thoughts about sycros rims? Bombshell? any suggestions? I will most likly go tubeless, weather its true tubeless, or the ghetto tubeless system, But I really like the idea of not having super heavy dh tubes in my tires to keep from pinch flating(which i've done only a few times).

I'm also not sure of which brakes to get. i really don't want to get hayes, I've had bad luck with those, and don't like the lever feel. I do, however, really like the lever feel of avid jucies. Are those pretty good brakes? I have yet to try out a pair that have been burnt in and well used. I've had great luck with my avid mechanical, so i'm guessing that the stoping power caries over quite well. But I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Any experience with avids, or others?

Any info will help, thanks!

If you like the juicys, Go for it, You won't be disapointed

And I would also say 729's for the rims............

It sounds like you have your mind set on the juicy's, so go with them and you won't be dissapointed. I recommend the Mavic 721 rim, 32 hole. You can save weight over the 729's. I have had my Hadley/521 (same as new 721) 32 hole combo for 5 years now and they have been through season after season of slalom, 4X, street and BMX racing and are still great. Build them up on DT 14/15 with brass nipples and you will be good to go.

721 or 729 for rims (both are great and the 721 is light, 729 is reasonable). Can't go past Avid Juicies IMO... those things are incredible.

are the 721's really that strong? it seems like they're pretty light. I guess I'll have to check them out again. thanks for the info. ya, I think the avid's are the way i'm going to go. they aren't too bad price wise either. i'll price some things out today when i stop by my local bike shop. Any other suggestions for rims other than 721''s and 729;s? are the 823's no good? if they suck, what's so bad about them? What about a Dee max wheelset? it seems like there are alot of people running those. I personaly have had no experience with them, but it seems like they're pretty good.

Yep, 721s are pretty damn strong. 729s are also great, probably better at resisting buckling, but not quite so good at resisting flatspotting/denting (they're still miles ahead of most rims though). Personally I'm more of a 721 fan, they're lighter and nearly indestructible for what they are. 823s have had chronic issues with flatspotting; Deemax I'd steer away from purely on the basis of cost (replacing a Deemax rim is ~3x the cost of a 721/729 I believe).

rims arrow dhx hands down. Im a pretty smooth rider, but like everyone I have beaten rims to piss and they stay straight as an arrow.. that was bad... Brakes, hopes.. If you can have someone or yourself set them up properly they have more power and modulation than any other brake I have ever ridden.

dude if you get the 721's built buy a proffesional wheel builder like the guys at unreal those things will be indestructible. deffinatly no arrows those things are tanks. im not much of a weight junkie but those are rediculose. and deffinatly juicy 7s for the brakes. i woul have suggested the el caminos but you said no hayes so go for those man. sounds like your gonna have a solid bike good luck.

cool. I'm still not quite sure on rims though. I'm going to check and see how much better the 2005 model of the 823's are than the 2004 models. I think they're supposed to be stronger. if it doesn't work out, I might just get the 721's or 729's. not quite sure yet.

the 823 would be easier to set up tubeless and if you are smooth you won't have a problem, just keep an eye on the spoke tension, I have 729's now(setup tubeless w/ maxxis rim strips) and have had 321's before, no problems, bomb proof.

brakes, I like my hopes, mono4's modulate nicely. haven't tried juicy's.

I ride 823´s, and i can agree on the spoke tension problem, after one day of riding they were like rediculus loose all of them... so i have had DT prolock niples installed instead og the weight saving alu niples, that has helped alot... om gonna get a new rear wheel (new bike with 150mm spacing), and i am gonna go for a 721 intead, have used them alot before with no problems at all...
But i dont see any problem in running a 823 on the front wheel, it dont get as much hammering as the rear wheel, so i think its gonne be fine!
