Mornin all. I'm draggin this morning. Went and saw Digable Planets last night up in Boulder. They were TIGHT. Great show. Got to bed much later than I have in a long time. <yawn>
I'm not as into as I used to be (family, new house, etc.), but I went through enough gear in my younger/stupider years and have ended up with a pretty decent setup.
DVD Player: Toshiba - will eventually be moved to the family room and replaced with an NAD for the theater.
Satellite: DirecTV - has component video, will be upgraded to HD when more HD programming is available
Projector: Optoma H57 - last year's version of this. Currently using an 80" screen that came with the projector, but once the basement is finished and everything is dialed in, we'll replace it with something better/bigger - probably 150" or so.
Main Speakers: Virtuel Acoustique 3ways
Center: matched Virtuel Acoustique
Rears: Energy RVSS - these will eventually be replaced and moved to the family room with matched Energy Pro Series mains/center
Sub: PSB Subsonic 6
All cabling is of similar quality
Last night was the first time I've been able to use everything together in a decent setup. Nothing is really dialed in yet, but already it sounds great. Screw the movie theater... give me some microwaved popcorn and a beer - I'll take my basement over an $8 movie ticket and $10 popcorn anyday.
Sounds like a really nice setup... Mine isn't quite as fancy, but it works well. We finished our basement to do the same thing. The room is smaller though so I wouldn't want to put anything bigger than about 60 inches.
I'm getting a new TV. Probably a Sony LCD-RP in the 50-55 inch range.
Denon receiver. I think its a 1804. Got it a couple of years ago. After the TV its the next thing to upgrade.
Paradigm Mini Monitor main speakers.
Paradigm CC370 center front
Paradigm CC270 rear center
Paradigm Titan surrounds
JBL PB10 sub (I think that's the model number). Want a new one but this one performs for now
Toshiba DVD, not sure which model. Its pretty old. I'm replacing it when we get the new TV.
I have the system calibrated. I like the sound the Denon/'digm gives, and its all pretty well timbre matched.
I prewired the walls when we finished it. I can give a few suggestions if you plan on finishing the basement soon...
EDIT: how are those Virtuel speakers? I've never heard of them?
Paradigm stuff is weird, IMO. Some of their stuff I absolutely love, some of their stuff I hate. I demoed (and eventually bought for my inlaws) a set of Paradigm bookshelf speakers (don't remember the model). they are probably one of the best sounding bookshelf speakers I've ever heard. Then I listened to one of their floorstanding models, and I couldn't stand the sound. Odd how one line of speakers can vary so much.
Yea, we prewired our family room, and will do the same in the basement when the time comes. A buddy of mine runs a highish end A/V shop, so I go to him for everything.
The Virtuels are AWESOME. My brothers have PSBs that are a few years newer and one step higher in price than my virtuels are. The PSBs have a touch more detail in HT use, but the virtuels blow them away for music - MUUUUCH smoother. They are made by a very small company out of Canada (Quebec, I think) called Audio Specialiste. Virtuel is one of their product lines... or at least was, I'm not sure they even make them any more. The mains that I have had such high demand that they couldn't keep production up. They made them for 1 year, then switched to a different driver (more readily available) which totally changed the sound, and thus they pretty much fell off the face of the earth. Here is a review on them, though I only have the mains and center.
Yesterday I ordered a Sherwood receiver for our faimly room. I don't need anything fancy, but it's got a cool sounding feature (gimmock?)... full quality video upconversion. Meaning I can feed the receiver a s-video signal and it up-converts it to component video quality. For me, that means 2 things - first, I can get component video quality from all video sources, and I can use the receiver to do all video switching, which will cut down on cables and will make watching different video sources easier (only have to change the input on the receiver). I'll be interested to see how well it works... should be here in a few days.
I mowed last night, and it's been so long since we've had any decent rain there are places in the yard when I've got the mower running I'm fully engulfed in a nice brown cloud....
I thought AR is suppose to not be semi-arid..........
Nope, the greater Little Rock metro area here...........we're 7+ inches behind on rain. The last decent amount of rain (which I consider 1.0"+ with respect to lawn watering value) was about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Last week we got some "teaser" 0.1" showers but nothing of value.
One hard rain after all this dryness and the trails will change dramatically.

I really like the sound. I only have the mini monitors. I was happy with the Titans (the midrange of their low end line) until I got the mini-mons. They sound MCH better. Which is why the Titans are now in the back. I haven't heard their floorstanding speakers. I can only imaging they are maybe a little boomy, since the mini-mon have a large range.
Its no surprise that Virtuels are made in canada. Canadians seem to have a pretty good grasp on speaker manufacturing.
Our theater is almost exclusively for HT. we rarely listen to music there. We don't listen to alot of music throughout the house, but I do need to replace the main speakers, since they are about 30 years old (yes, really - they were a hand-me-down)
Made the decision to buy a new computer last night. I can't afford to not have a backup from my laptop and I no longer trust my desktop, it's just too old and has had too many failures. So, it'll be nice to actually have a decent desktop but it's going to suck to lay out the money
Are you really thinking about shelling out the cash for a whole new computer simply to backup your laptop?
Save yourself a bunch of money and simply get an external usb2 hard drive. Not only will it be cheaper, but it'll be a lot easier to backup your laptop to it.
