ive been considering getting a DH hub just cause i dont want this **** breaking on me again, ive been breaking a lot of stuff on my xc bike lately which is a 03 xl santa cruz superlight. Im 6' 6" 200lbs. I didnt have problems till i decided to get some grimica disc brakes and wheels off a guy for cheap cause i thought it was a good deal. This is the biggest mistake i have ever made and id still have my ****ty xt wheels and rim brakes if i didnt sell that stuff already. First i tacoed the front rim, so the front rim is brand new other than the hub and rotor. Now the rear rim hub assembly broke so the freewheel freewheels the wrong way on me, and because grimica no longer has a US distribitor i am SOL on fixing whats on there. It has a wtb laserdisc rim which im replacing cause the **** has come out of true 4 times since ive gotten it. So anyways what reccomendations do you guys have for me.

If your in need of just a hub i would look into something made by like AZONIC, or another well known company like that. I am riding AZONIC outlaw wheels for dirt jumping and they are actually the best wheels ive ever used, and retail on a whole set of those wheels, meaning including spokes and rims, is only like 350

I've had suprisingly good luck with my shimano XT disc hub, I recently rebuilt it expecting to find all kinds of pits in the races but they were nice and clean and the goofy seals actually kept the grease clean looking after 2 years of riding. The thing is a boat anchor compared to more expensive hubs, but for the price I don't think you can beat the durability as long as you don't mind packing the bearings with grease every couple of years. If you're looking for a wheelset there are good deals on RhynoliteXL/XT disc wheelsets, the rims are about as light as you can get without getting into the flimsy all mountain rims. I reccomend universal cycles, although their prices are a little higher than places like pricepoint or jenson you get a hand built wheel which is much stronger than a machine built wheel you'll get at other mail order places.

I'd agree with the XT disc hubs. They've got slow engagement, they're not pretty, and it's one of the heaviest rear hubs you can buy, but they're cheap, reliable, and easily rebuildable.

The xt rear hub on "Do anything" hardtail has been great for over a year and a half. The xt on my DH got loose in 9 months, rebulidable though.
On a side note, I just got a set of the Azonic Outlaws for $239...I think it was from Universal Cycles. They are factory built-just check/tighten the spokes before riding. Although I haven't really tested them yet, I'm impressed with the overall quailty, reasonably low weight and the fact you can switch from QR to Thru axle..not to mention the price.

Universal Cycles Rocks! The Xt on my hardtail has been great, no issues at all. I was even running a deore hub (one step below the xt) on my stinky for a while and it gave me no problems either.

XT's are great priced budget hubs. I don't think anything under $100 will touch an XT.

There's also Formula and some other odd-ball named cheapy ones out there. For a rear I'd try to buy a better hub. You can find disc rear's from Hugi/Onyx and maybe even Hope (possibly used) that are about $100 and will last for years. The only quark with the cheapy hubs (except XT) is finding parts for them. XT's you can get parts damm near anywhere in the world.

I've had XT rear's for years. They work great and don't cost an arm and a leg. Plus if you trash one you know you are not out $100's+ for a rear hub :)

Old hugi hubs are okay, but then you have the used factor to deal with. A new XT is 52 bucks at www.universalcycles.com, and if you find it cheaper anywhere else they'll price match it (shameless plug.....). New XT will last you a while.

I agree w/ zane on this one. I've been finding the old Hugi/Hayes hubsets new on ebay for just over $100.00 (front and back). Those things are god-awful loud, but I have one that's 6 years old, and has yet to need service (spins soooo schmooooood). That one's been on my Karpiel Disco, Armageddon, a Specialized FSR MaxBackbone, and currently on an Enduro Pro. I bought another set for my XC HT (slightly heavier than the 240, but at less than 1/3 the price w/ the same mechs). Oh BTW, this particular model I'm talking about has been rebadged for Magura.

I am an advocate of the XT. Put a solid axle in it if yo want it stiffer. Heavy yes, byt also bombproof. I have it on my M1. 2 years and no issues. I weigh 200+.
