my convo

am: Hello.
Pam: Welcome. How can I help you today?
you: Hi
Pam: Hello
you: Is it possible to have 2 seperate Internet connections on the same cable line
Pam: I'm sorry, but I don't have that information. You can visit http://www.roadrunner.com for an answer to your question.
Pam: Your service will allow you to connect one computer to the internet, however if you would like to connect additional computers, you can purchase additional equipment (like a router) from an outside vendor, or if you have it, you could configure Internet Connection Sharing Service on your computer.
Pam: Is there anything else I can help you with?
you: ex. I rent an apt from my landlords and they have an internet connection set up already using cable
you: I want to run my own connection
Pam: Do you have cable tv in your apt?
you: yes
you: but we use the same cable as the landlords
Pam: Do you pay your bill separately?
you: no
Pam: You pay the landlord?
you: yes
you: it's included in the rent anyway
Pam: ok
Pam: I can set you up for Internet connection, but the cable modem rebate wouldn't be applicable to you
you: so we can have seperate cable connections on the same line
Pam: Yes
you: not using a router?
Pam: Shall I place the order for High Speed Internet for you?
Pam: Remember that the cable modem rebate doesn't apply in your situation. So that modem will be 89.95 plus 9.00 S& H
Pam: You will use the router.
Pam: and the cable modem.
you: so how will the router reach my apt that is 100' away?
Pam: That is the problem... I'm not sure the answers to that. Maybe you should call 1-888-COMCAST and talk to their technical people..
you: ok....
you: thanks for the help

What a tard.

I think you should ask you landlord to add you via a new router. You can run 100' of lan cable with little difficulty. That and a new wired router will run you less than $50 on newegg, then just ask your landlord to add a little money to the rent to share the connection.

I bet he'd hook you up if you bought the router.

well we can't really run the wire because we are 2 seperate buildings and he would have to cross 2 driveways to get to me.

Here's the deal. Cable crosses driveways all of the time. They even hang it in the air. I don't see why, if you have cable, you can't just put a splitter on the line and put a modem on it. It will cost you service, and the $100. Can't you do that???

But then he wouldn't get free cable.

(ASSuming he wasn't being charged for it through his rent)

So you think it is about being cheap???

I ordered some new shoes from Performance and tried a coupon and they said it was no good anymore. OK, well I still get 10% back later and upgraded shipping. No one else that had 45s had them on sale, so why not buy them from Performance. Just for giggles I searched Perfomance coupons on Google and find that people just bitch away. OK, so they didn't send it to you, someone posted it on the Internet and they won't let you use it after 612,000 already have. Boo hoo. Why are people so cheap??? It's like performance owes them something and then they suck when they don't just cave in.

IT'S NOT ABOUT BEING CHEAP

Also I don't know how you do it in texas but round here stringing a cable across 100' of beautiful open farm isn't the norm.

In TX it's usually a cable draped through the yard from one broken truck to the next.

I'm not sure I understand this specific problem. Somebody made a "coupon" for performance on the internet that wasn't actually from the company?
That's strange.

Otherwise, there is a certain level of dissappointment when a company promises something to you (possibly in this case the coupon) and doesn't deliver.

I never understood why people bitch when they try to use expired coupons. They don't understand the concept of limit time offer, and often get mad at the cashier for not being able to turn back time.

Nope someone had a coupon code extended to them and it was posted on the Internet. Performance finally killed it.

Wait, so you and your buddies go around and identify "known Yankees" in your neighborhood?

And you take pictures of their houses?

I have the slower version, the DI-524 54mbps, and it rocks. Brainless install.
The hard part would be getting my landlord to go along and where to mount it in their house.

Why because there are no cars on blocks in the front yard or because they don't have lawn jockey's holding laterns? :blah:

Yup.

Those things are really small, small as or smaller than most cable modems.

If you tell him that you'll buy the router, and then you'll give him a split in the bill, I bet he'll take it. If he already has cable internet, then this is a VERY simple solution. Unless he's running a server or some other intensive thing, he'll never notice that you're even on.

Seriously, that thing takes like 5 minutes to set up.

Yes.

A PCI wireless is about $20-$30 online for the basic ones, or about $50 for the 102mbps ones that will match speed w/ the DI-624 above.

Basically wireless is in 3 major flavors right now:

802.11b = 11mbps
802.11g = 54mbps
802.11g "extreme" = 102mbps

1) Plug the LAN cable from the modem into the WAN (wide-area network) port on the router.

2) Plug any wired comps into the 4 available ports. (ie. your landlord's machine).

3) Run the setup wizard from a web browser. You type in the address to the router and configure it directly from the wired machine. Done at Mr. Landord's house.

4) Plug the PCI adapter into your comp and boot up. Presto.

There are a ton of extras in there, security, filtering, etc. You can even block certain comps from access at certain times of the day. It's all easy to set up.

The only possible problem is obstructions, like trees, walls, concrete, etc. They make booster antennas if needed.

It all sounds pricey but compare this to a dedicated cable line or getting sattelite access.
