avid makes a pretty good v brake i run them on my xc bike they work pretty damb good and they are light

Definitely go Avid for V's. They are sweet.

...and squeal like a stuck pig! Something about the Shimano pads and/or "parallel push" thingy. My Avids never squealed until I had to use XTR inserts as a last resort. Weird.

Yep, Avids. The arch rivals limit your tire size, though. I'd just get single digits. Less parts to deal with, too...and that's what Vs are all about. Simplicity.

i use cartrige pads and they've never squealed, not sure about the LX/XT/XTR parallel push ones though....

XTRs are the nicest and I was stupid and sold mine and now have Avid SD7s on my SS and don't like them.
