Hello temporarily fast internet!!!! WOOOT!!!

Compared to my normal home internet speed of 6 down, 1 up, this is blistering. Of course, it's only for the next 24h when the free trial of mobile hotspotting goes away... :(

I'm tempted to root it and use this more, but the cell companies seem to be strangling users who use a decent amount of bandwidth (or going after them for the internet usage like AT&T), so I'm not really sold on that approach.

Yow.

I wish I could get a reasonable upload speed. I really don't need much more downstream bandwidth - mine is about 20 Mbps now, and it's perfectly adequate - but the 1.5 Mbps upload cap drives me batty when I'm trying to back stuff up.

Probably sunspots BV, that's over wi-fi. Plugged into the LAN for s&g's.

Must have upgraded me to the gigabit service. Bastards better not be charging me extra.

I still don't get speeds anywhere near to what I pay for. When I can get good LTE coverage here, it's about 5-10mb/s faster then my wifi

Edit: just tested Comcast again 15.19 d/l 10.74 u/l. Att LTE 34.92 d/l 16.88 u/l

Comcast 50/10 Mbps w/cablecard basic cable TV service (I have a networked 3-tuner device and I own my own cable modem) $48/month total w/taxes and fees

Your Speed Result:
Download Speed: 51829 kbps (6478.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 10305 kbps (1288.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'll admit that as psyched as I'd be about Google Fiber, I'm actually pretty damn happy with my current (new) ISP. Jumped on a "$30 for 30Mbps" deal in October, and actual speeds are *way* higher than quoted:

For direct downloads it's usually limited by the host site, and for bittorrenting it only really gets up to speed when there are a ton of Seeds. And (at least for now) I really can't complain about only spending $30/month on it. That's their introductory price for a year, but they're usually pretty good about extending it if you call up and threaten to quit. The downside is that the only competition is U-Verse which has a max of 18Mbps/1.5Mbps in my area, and the lowest they could go was $40 (I called them up to see if they would price-match Charter).

IH8Rice - That's an awesome speed for LTE. My Verizon only gets ~12-15Mpbs down...

If you're talking about U-Verse, don't hold your breath as it's guaranteed to be worse than what you have. The *fastest* possible U-Verse internet is 24Mb/s down, 2Mb/s up. The best they could offer me was 18Mb/s down, 1.5Mb/s up. The decision to go with Fiber to the Node screwed them in the long run as everyone's been offering faster and faster internet speeds...

Overall anything higher than 20-25Mbps is kinda pointless for anything other than specifically downloading HD content. It's more than fast enough to stream HD content, and fast enough for several HD skype calls at once, and I only really notice it when downloading shows, cycling, etc.

u-verse speeds are, as you pointed out, sufficient for 99% of household needs. IOW, i'm not doing any benchtesting for distributed rendering apps, so now it's a matter of how little cheddar can i get what i need.

when my 6mo trial period is over, there should be newly minted fibre throughout the shire

The only good thing about U-Verse being in your neighborhood is the "look, I'm sitting here with a flyer for (insert competitor here) and they're offering XX for only $YY, and while I've been really happy with your service (blatant lie) that $20 per month really does add up..." I must have played Charter and AT&T off against each other a dozen times over the past 4-5 years.

"I'm not able to offer you anything, but would you like to hold and speak to a 'customer retention specialist' who might be able to work with you?"

I suspect that my modem is the limiting factor for my connection. It's a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, so I'm bumping right up against the max speed.

Download isn't bad. Usually I don't even hit that 32 Mbps number with those, so the servers are likely the problem. What I'd really like is more upload speed. I move 2+ GB files pretty frequently for work (my monthly usage has been in excess of 250 GB) and uploads of those can be slower than I'd like.

ive been wanting to get a new wifi router w/ usb since my wifi has been super slow on all my computers and mobile/tablet devices. im usually only seeing 15-20ish mb/s and loading videos from YT (or other sites) can be tortourious compared to LTE's 25-30mb/s.

im using a Linksys G w/ "speed boost" but want something that will do wireless N and with a usb input for a external HDD that wont break the bank. suggestions?

not sure if you are anti-apple, but the airport extreme and airport express consistently get stellar reviews for reliability and speed. i have one extreme and two expresses in my house and haven't touched them since i set them up.

express is $99 and extreme is $179. both have usb ports.

well, they push their "proprietary-ish" device for $7/mo (arris tm602g), but you'll then also have to get a wireless router to broadcast (or as i did, recover a moth-balled n-router)

Right - I'm going to tell them to pound sand on their device. So is there anything tech-wise I should look for in a cable modem? I'd like built-in wireless...

woohoo!!!! Verizon pissed me off during a billing dispute (charging for channels I wasn't getting) so I threatened to leave and brought up a promotion that comcast was having. i would never ever ever leave FIOS (especially for comcast) but the result is 24 months of this for $49.99 a month. hell yeah.

In the process of changing my internet provider, bundled with a new smart phone it was too cheap not to jump. It's a gigabit service so be interesting to see what speeds I get. We must have at least 20 devices in this house that can connect to the internet and I can't see that amount getting any smaller.

i wonder how fast Fios can boost their speeds to on their fiber optic lines.

i remember looking into prices for T1 or T3 at the retail store i managed and it was crazy. its good to see Google taking steps to test their system out by setting up the system for a few lucky towns. my hometown is trying to get in on it
I have Fios and a couple times I registered a at best 150mb speeds. Now it seems to hover at or near 30-50

just now.

So I finally upgraded to the gigabit service last month but my isp was doing network upgrades so the speeds really dropped off at nights which pissed me off no end. Anyway it's fixed now.

You should complain. You're not getting your rated speed. :D
