Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he will vote against the measure on the floor but allowed it to get there in part to give the GOP the debate party leaders believe will pay off on Election Day. Specter has chosen a different battle with the Bush administration this week - a hearing Tuesday on the ways the FBI spies on journalists who publish classified information.
White House press secretary Tony Snow acknowledged said there was a political dimension to Bush's remarks Monday, but said the president was not calling senators to persuade them to pass the amendment.
Nothing gets the votes out more than homosexual issues.

Having to stir up the hatred of a significant proportion of your native population based on nothing but ignorance in order to win an election should make normal people stop and consider their position.

A constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage went down to Senate defeat Wednesday, but supporters said that several new votes for the measure represent progress that gives the GOP’s base reason to vote on Election Day.
But the House, where the elections are more of a worry to the GOP, plans a vote for later next month so as to get this issue closer to the election.

“The Republican leadership is asking us to spend time writing bigotry into the Constitution,” said Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, whose state legalized gay marriage in 2003. “A vote for it is a vote against civil unions, against domestic partnership, against all other efforts for states to treat gays and lesbians fairly under the law.”

Hatch responded: “Does he really want to suggest that over half of the United States Senate is a crew of bigots?”
Truth hurts doesn't it, Orrin? No wait you revel in it.

“The administration believes that the future of marriage in America should be decided through the democratic constitutional amendment process, rather than by the court orders of a few,” a White House statement said.
Of all the fvcking things that the government has on its plate......

And here was me thinking that they'd plan to lose. It would at least have been original.
some Dems seriously suggested tanking the mid-terms so the Repubs can continue to screw things up and give the Dems a serious chance at the White House.

Just goes to show that the Dems have no game plan and are totally lost, but at least they recognize that fact. Finally.

And acknowledging the problem is the first step.
