If I mount the camera on the side of my ff helmet it seems like the video will playback sideways (because the camera will be side mounted). Is that the case? And where is the best place on the helmet for a mount?

They sell adapters so the camera may be positioned horizontally.
You can try using the pieces included in the handlebar/seat post mount kit:

I seem to recall somebody stating it was a good idea to pick this up if you choose to use the chest mount setup too.

gopro offers plenty of mouting kits.
i mount it like this:
everything used here is include in the basic gopro package. except for the carbon plate which i screw to the helmet with the visor screw. simpel and completely removable is a few seconds.
