Officers foiled a commercial burglary Sunday morning after pursuing the suspects in a car chase, according to a news release from the San Luis Obispo Police Department. The suspects allegedly stole six high-end bicycles valued at more than $40,000 from Cambria Bicycle Outfitters on Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo.
Cambria Bicycle Outfitters’ security alarm sounded at 4 a.m., alerting a CHP unit in the area, according to the release. The officers observed a white Ford van leaving the store's parking lot at high speed, the release said. After the CHP attempted a vehicle stop, the driver fled and the CHP unit followed until the van crashed at Casa Street and Murray Avenue.
The driver, identified as Earvwin McCullar, 49, of Fresno, was taken into custody. A passenger, an unidentified adult male, escaped on foot and hasn’t been located, according to the release.
Inside the van, police found six bicycles with price tags from Cambria Bicycle Outfitters still attached, the release said.
According to police, the van was reported stolen in Woodland in Northern California.
McCullar was booked into County Jail on suspicion of operating a stolen vehicle, commercial burglary and possession of stolen property. His bail was set at $50,000.
