Wow. this hits hard. Given the tough retail environment, I wonder if a few more well-known bedrock companies of the sport might also be closing down,

That sucks. Hopefully everyone can find new jobs or have some time to move out.

Though not surprising, I don't think I've ever seen a "modern" GT in person.

Looks like they are just cutting off leaks in $ and dropping as much load as possible to sustain..sell old stock with no new development for a year or 2 like most brands..just to ensure a future
Which based on what I've seen they have a good lineup for a couple years for models that will perform...

Just change paint a little and sell em as a 2025 like Santa Cruz when no updates are done...

Just saw a video by Phil Metz aka Skills with Phil.
Apparently PON was asked to sell GT but they refused opting to "pause" it after current inventory is sold.

Do they still own Cannondale and Santa Cruz?
Yep, still hold both those brands.

From reading on Vital, the rumour is that Cannondale will handle warranty and servicing for GT whilst it goes in to hiatus.

I see more old school Zasksars rolling around. But this area is a hot spot for old dentist bikes.

All brands go through their difficult times, but I’d thought GT were pushing through into clearer skies.

Their DH bike is really well received, they have plenty of budget friendly models that seek to be perfect for the weekend crowd, I guess it’s been too many years of lacklustre sales.

Cannondale do big numbers in road - maybe that’s why GT becomes the sacrificial goat of Pon?

Thinking back to the “glory days” of when I started riding - all those once illustrious brands seems to be struggling badly. Intense, GT, Orange, Kona, even Trek seems to be wobbling.

And those are the brands till surviving.

Fingers crossed GT can arise with a smaller line up and more concentrated effort. Would hate to see the brand gone forever.

Orange is Illustrious?

I thought they were always just a Santa Cruz Bullit tribute band

I really hope that GT will survive and come back strong in a few years.

The worst outcome would be to turn the brand into department store garbage like they did with Schwinn. Let's hope this never happens.

If you grew up in the U.K., orange were seen as a brand with cache. Peaty, Beaumont, fairclough, the animal orange team.

I lusted after a patriot pretty badly

I just finished rebuilding my dad's old (late 90s) Zaskar for him. The whole drivetrain was worn out. I also swapped the handlebars and stem for something more modern. He's not doing much real MTBing anymore but still wants to ride it on easier dirt and gravel trails. I can't even remember the last time I've seen a bike that old on the trails around here.

my brief experience with a 1990s S Works (when my old Shuttle was getting its frame replaced for either the first or second time--front and rear triangles went separately before this last rear triangle incident this year) was more than enough to convince me to never look fondly upon a vintage bike again.

modern geometry is just so much better than that old narrow bar, long stem, steep angles crap.

@CBJ can I get my money back on that GT jersey I bought from you for my wife? She sold that GT Fury bike several years ago now.

Hearing during Summer Pon Holdings was with intent to remove all their Bicycling ventures.
Pretty certain that's the intent they started with as well, if you know anything about their history (or the history of private equity takeovers in general)...

I picked up a 2008 GT Sanction in 2011 when all my friends told me 160mm travel was too much bike for me. The year after, they all bought an enduro bike. I will always be thankful for the amount of fun I had on that bike for 5 years in a row. First bikepark visit, first alpine adventure, first enduro race.
I can understand a lot of people like to make jokes about i-drive, but for me it worked just fine.

My first MTB was a GT Timberline and I used to want an RTS, then an LTS and then a Lobo.

Nico, Kovarik, Rennie & Peaty all raced on them. Legendary brand. Sucks to see it go.

Same. Timberline was my first MTB. Then I financed an LTS at an appliance/bike/hardware store through their GE appliance finance program. Owner was quite slimy, but I got the bike of my dreams at the time. Had a GT Performer BMX bike as a kid. Used to paw through BMX Plus for pictures of Eddie Fiola blasting airs out of the Pipeline skatepark. So much history in that brand.

Like I was alluding to above, I only saw GT on equal footing with Specialized and Trek from the "beginning" and up through I-drive 1.0. After that, they seemed to be a faltering brand that may have flamed out at any given moment, and they did at least once.
