Look at the wheelbase numbers on a size 3 and compare that to every other bike you've ever owned.

If that's the way you want to go cool. I just like to be able to lift the front wheel on my mountain cycles.

We doin spine replacements now? I'm in!
that's a big 'ol wheelbase . . . ~30mm longer than my large bromad4 . . . and i thought that thing felt stable as hell at speed in the rough. does that mean the gg is moar stable at moar speedzzzzz? bromad's not super nimble, but with a 40mm stem it's not super slow steering at lower speeds either.

In the bathroom, fighting a battle
Been talking to the folks at the Shredquarters and gave myself this weekend to decide on color and a couple other things before plating an order for a TP on Monday.

What's the consensus when it comes to Ribbon vs Helm, both 140mm air sprung? SoCal trails, lots of chatter puctuated by small jumps, lots of medium sized rock and some big rawks. How say you?

Next, dropper post, I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam, thinking I want more than 150mm post on a size 3 right? Ideally I want to have it as slammed as possible when down, but dont't want the "up" position un-pedalably high either. Thinking with a 17" seat tube a 170mm post should work out about the same as the 150mm on my current bike with it's 19" seat tube. Or am I on drugs?

know a few people with helms here (north carolina) who have been very pleased with the helm on both local trails and in the mountains. no experience on the ribbon...

Now I'm not so sure. Wheelbase is long, but isn't it mostly up front? the chaintstays are about the same length as my N3. I get that's more in front of me to lift.

If I get a 2, then the "short" mode says use a 70mm stem (will never ever do). In the "long" mode, it says use a 50mm stem, same as my current setup. Longer wheelbase than my N3 by 71mm

If I get a 3, then I'd run "short" mode with a 32mm stem and have a wheelbase 94mm (at 1236mm length) longer than my N3.

Geez. A large N4 has a wheelbase of 1216mm. I guess that is a big bike.

I guess it might be hard to steer some

embrace the length.

i dunno. i'd rather have the option of running a longer mode than vice versa (just to have the ability to explore the realm of the new longness hype). i've been riding progressively longer bikes (current bike is 493 reach, though i'm 6/0), and yet to hit the "too long" point for our janky tech. riding styles may vary, but (after years of riding much shorter bikes) i love a more spacious cockpit.

So you won't run a 70mm stem but then say shit like you'll run a 32mm stem? That's just as stupid in the other direction. Stem length is a HANDLING thing not a reach thing.

Reach is not religion. That's mtbr/dirt roadie shit. You can ride stretched out over the front, or more upright with more weight on the rear wheel. They both work. The best bike riders in the world have run "reach" numbers miles apart on different bikes between dh a dirtjump bikes. And do things on those hardtails that most mountainbikers wouldn't even think of with all the enderpo safety travel in the world.

At a certain point, your center of gravity gets pulled so far forward you can't get your ass over your back wheel to lift the front end of the thing. Or correct when you get bucked......which happens a lot with huge reach numbers. You're talking similar chainstays and 3-4 inches longer wheelbase. That's huge. You're actually scared of a bike that's ONLY 71mm longer than your current one? Jeesh. Fuck that 70mm stem bullshit, that same logic would put you on a 100mm stem on your current bike. You obviously don't do that and you already know that it works with a 50mm or whatever you have on there.

Ask Matt or someone else at GG if there's anyone in bellingham with a 3. Tell them they're brand ambassadors and they have to ambassad. Which means let you ride their bike.

Ha, yes, I’m a victim of fashion to a degree. I’m also just using the stem length recommendations from the GG bike builder.

I just don’t have a ton of experience riding different bikes/setups. The real probability of my switching between “long” and “short” mode is pretty much zero, along with the probability of my owning a variety of stem lengths no matter which frame size I choose.

So really, the shorter bike will probably make for a more versatile/nimble bike in the end. While still being longer in the wheelbase than my N3 for moar stabiliteez.

I hadn’t thought of the “bucking” scenario...

As for riding in Bellingham, that sounds great. Finding the time might be tricky...

I'M WAITING!!!!!
I went digging. So are you looking to basically run a Megatrail with it slacker than standard? ie, angle adjusting headset cups? We don't have those....yet. Right now the CNC machines are running close to 12 hours/day, 7 days/week. When some capacity opens up, angle adjust cups will probably happen. There are a few ways to make angle adjust cups, and that needs to be tested as well.

That mostly answers my question. You said there were ways to make a megatrail lower. That's one of the pieces for sure. Thanks!

and hurry up and buy another CNC machine

This is what I was asking about, in the conversation about taking the bottom bulge cup out. I'd like to take that riser cup out to lower the front end, but then slack it back out to get close to the same geo, just lower. Follow me?
unfollowabru. i suggest you but some old sixc crabon barz and experiment.

Got it. You want a zero stack lower cup with auto slackening technology (tm).

The Large Smash used to have a 1245 WB. I never found it an inconvience and was riding some twitsy stuff for this area. It has a 490mm Reach as well. I am 6' 1" and run a 35mm stem with a 200mm dropper. Could have run a 180mm but didnt have a choice.

Auto?

I have a headset press, I'm not that lazy. Jeesh.
That was the best marketing name I came up with in 5 seconds.

You actually don't need a headset press with the Revved frames. The GeoAdjust cups just push in with no tools, same as the bearings themselves.
