Jerry Springer Named Democratic Delegate

CINCINNATI - Ohio Democrats have chosen talk-show host Jerry Springer to be an at-large delegate for the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

"He's made 50 appearances at Democratic events this year. He's been an outspoken advocate for the party," said Dan Trevas, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party.

Springer, who was the mayor of Cincinnati before hosting the raunchy "The Jerry Springer Show," was named Democrat of the Year by the state party last weekend. He was named Friday as one of 159 delegates and 24 alternates from Ohio at the convention July 26-29, when Sen. John Kerry is expected to be nominated as the party's candidate for president.

"We welcome all delegates," said Jennifer Palmieri, Ohio spokeswoman for the Kerry campaign.

State Republicans said Democrats sank low by naming Springer as a delegate.

"They ought to be absolutely embarrassed and ashamed of this guy, but obviously standards take a back seat to power in the party of Bill Clinton," Ohio Republican chairman Robert T. Bennett said.

Springer, 60, spent about $1 million last year exploring whether to run for the Senate before deciding not to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. George Voinovich. He said he realized he couldn't be elected as long as he continued to host his syndicated talk show.

Springer is considering running in 2006 for either Ohio governor or for the state's other Senate seat.

The Dems would be in trouble if they weren't running against the mandroid.

I really think this election is indeed Kerry's to lose.

I wonder what the Vegas odds are...?

Don't know what the Vegas odds are but the polls show them about head to head. Chances are whatever happens in Iraq and with the economy in the next few months will decide it. Things are not looking much better in the middle east and the stock market just dipped below 10,000.

Actually it's kind of a smart move - The people who would watch his show normally are the ones that would benefit from the democrat's mentality, but are also probably less likely to be involved with politics...

When one wins by such small margins..........we all lose.

Just like last time. We didn't really want either candidate. I mean really. Popular vote and all it was actually pretty close not enough to say the country really wanted one guy decisively over the other.

Give me a candidate who grabs 75% please! That means partisian politics was less of an issue and a true president stood before you.

Sorry just a non-partisian thought.

Was he passing out Jerry beads to chicks that flashed him?

I think Springer probably is a good smart guy who's show has simply taken an odd and almost comical road inorder to stay on the air. May look bad because his show is complete and utter dog $hit, but I believe he is probably a smart individual who probably has some good things to say/contribute.
