No, you gotta pick a side. I say stock-pile munitions before the government takes 'em away, along with your other rights. Damn too big government; now where's my SSD check?!

As dante pointed out, history shows Hilter was pro-gun since he removed gun regulations and encouraged ownership. I guess what the gun rights people are saying is Obama is doing the right thing by not emulating Hilter.
Sorry, I was being semi-sarcastic, trying to point out the off/on ways that some people view life.

Was doing some research on gun ownership in this country yesterday, and was relieved to find out that the demographics that have the LOWEST rate of gun ownership and MOST in favor of gun control are:

Aged 18-29
Minority
Women
College educated
No religion
Democrats
Urban

ALL are demographics that are increasing (aside from "women") in today's society, and all (including women) are increasing in political power with regards to getting elected and playing a greater role in politics. I almost think that as time goes on there's going to continue to be a cultural shift away from the gun culture that we have now. The fastest growing minority group in this country are Hispanics, who only have a gun in 29% of households (compared to 47% of white households). Will it happen immediately? No. But long term? Probably a pretty good chance that we'll see meaningful reform sometime in my lifetime....

But as the group who don't own guns grows larger, the group that does buy more to make up the difference. The divide grows as does the paranoia. :tinfoil:

i'll assume at least half of these groups represent legal/registered gun owners, which may be starkly different from actual data.

chicago wants to know why its high rate of gun violence exists in a climate of great restriction

I like the way he just quickly glosses over the fact that the murder rate in England/Wales is 1.4, while in the US it's 4.8 (per 100,000 people). 2/3rds fewer people getting murdered is usually a positive thing?

I'd also love to see what constitutes "violent crime" in both England/Wales and the US. Interesting little bit of reading on how the violent crime rate in the US is calculated:

http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/85f0035x/85f0035x2001000-eng.pdf

The FBI only includes four main offences in the violent crime index – homicide, forcible
rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The FBI’s exclusion of simple assault, which is the leading contributor to
Canada’s violent crime rate, makes this comparison impossible.
And what does the UK count as "violent crime"?

teh wiki said:
Includes all violence against the person, sexual offences, and robbery as violent crime.
And look at that, just like in Canada, "non-injury crime" is the most common....

So basically the guy is comparing apples and oranges, using stats from the US that don't include simple assault, whereas the UK (and Canada) include those numbers...

and where he *does* compare apples-to-apples, he tries to make it apples-to-watermelons: "we have 6X the large metropolitan areas than they do", as if that's a stark difference....but turns out WE ALSO HAVE 6X THE GENERAL POPULATION, SO IT MATCHES UP PERFECTLY!

"Ordinary guy" talking in a slickly-produced video that promotes a single viewpoint and gets hundreds of thousands (or millions) of hits?

Anyone want to take bets that this has the NRA's (or some other massive conservative organization) fingerprint all over it?

Btw, good catch on the "large metropolitan areas" bit. Totally missed that.

Kinda funny how gunshops give discounts to the very people that are supposedly trying to "take your guns away".

I also work for the government, and it's amazing how people think we are somehow plotting to take over, yet we have just as many hard-core right-wing people in the government (tends to get that way due to former military guys). It's just so ridiculous on so many levels.

Yes, the most powerful man in the world wants to take your guns so he can become...the most powerful man in the world.....wait...

I wonder if when the first revolvers and repeating rifles were made, there was as much controversy. Also interesting to note that Wayne LaPierre was 4F during Vietnam...apparently had a mental issue (Nervous disorder?) that prevented the Army from taking him.

EDIT: I think we're beginning to see a specific pattern of behavior here.

But back then we had a good old white Republican in the White House...not a SocialistCommyPinkoKenyanMuslim who wants to take our guns and then our daughters, and give them health care and equal opportunity...

and your point is? is being in the military some sort of requirement for his position?

Yeah your recycled NRA talking points specifically worded to appeal to morons really set the bar.

There's nothing classy about a huge nation forced to take idiotic cowboy logic seriously.
when did i "recycle a nra talking point?" i have never supported the nra, nor will i. they are unfortunately a big supporter of our 2nd amendment rights.
and if you have a problem with the way our "cowboy ways" then by all means, immigrate to another country.

See that's the fun part about not knowing what the NRA actually does. You'll repeat things that get thrown around as common knowledge about gun ownership and not even know the source.

But here's a newsflash. They're not really supporters of your second amendment rights. They're supporters of your right to patronize their funders' companies. But that's what they've done this whole debate. They've made you think the second amendment is just a statement about individuals owning guns.

Agreed. The only thing that is as effective as sex for marketing purposes is fear. And the NRA does a great job of using it to their advantage.
