Gun owners of America? Seriously?

Yes I know exactly who they are. And they're hilarious. Dude just google Larry Pratt. He's been trying to out stupid Lapierre the last few years.

I know the NRA doesn't speak for everyone, but they ARE directly responsible for most of the indesputably destructive and absurd gun laws we have (hint, not the background checks) that are a huge part of our retarded gun culture. The government can't even study the effects of firearm ownership? Not even monsanto gets cancer research banned.

Here's GOA's take on the anti-trafficking bill:

Smoke a Joint, Get an ObamaPass
Sell a gun to someone who smokes a joint, get 20 years in jail

GOOFBALL PROVISION #1: The bill would impose a 20-year prison term if you planned (“conspired”) to purchase a firearm in order to give or raffle it to a person who, unbeknownst to you, is a “prohibited person.”
Pretty reasonable, right? If you're going to buy a gun for someone else, maybe you should know who it is you're buying it for, right? GOA feels a bit differently:

But probably the biggest category of “prohibited persons” is persons who smoke marijuana. Under 18 U.S.C. 922(d)(3) and (g)(3), you cannot possess a firearm in America if you are “an unlawful user of ... any controlled substance...”
So, in a gun-nut's mind, you can lose the right to vote but shouldn't lose the right to buy weapons.

And yes, I actually had a gun-nut try to justify that exact scenario (why he was so incensed that his criminal friends couldn't own a gun, but was perfectly fine with their inability to legally vote) because "voting is far more dangerous than owning a gun".

We, uh, don't talk anymore.

Monsanto did get approval for known carcinogens in our food. Its like the NRA pushing for things even they acknowledge are harmful.

During his days at King and Spaulding, Taylor also authored more than a dozen articles critical of the Delaney Clause, a federal law passed in 1958 prohibiting the introduction of known carcinogens to processed foods. The Delaney Clause had long been opposed by Monsanto and other chemical and pesticide companies. When Taylor rejoined the federal government, he continued to argue that Delaney should be overturned. This was finally done when President Clinton signed the so-called Food Quality Protection Act on the eve of the 1996 elections.

Now I pretty much want to wave a gun at everyone in Wal-mart too, but I don't. I must not be a responsible gun owner. JHFC, Murica.

Alday became verbally abusive toward a 48-year-old female employee when the employee explained that she could not use an Internet coupon. Alday struck the assistant manager with a shopping cart and was escorted out of the store. Alday went to her vehicle and retrieved a firearm in a holster. She removed the firearm from the holster and began waving it at the victim and three other store employees who had joined the investigation.

So.... What are they for again? (Aside from MOAR GUNS!!!)

That cracks me up, they put out a non-statement about what they're fighting against (and for), and then get the frothers to go running to the Congress to espouse the exact same non-statement. "PROTECT THE 2ND AMENDMENT!!!!!!"

Btw, hadn't realized till today that that straw-purchases (or selling to criminals) isn't *actually* a crime in and of itself. The only way it's illegal is that they claim that you lie to a federal official by filling out the "purchaser" form, and since you only fill that out when purchasing from a federally-licensed gun dealer it doesn't apply to private sales or gun shows.

ATF said:
In both instances, the straw purchaser violates Federal law by making false statements on Form 4473 to the licensee with respect to the identity of the actual purchaser of the firearm, as well as the actual purchaser's residence address and date of birth.

lots of data, but my quick take-away is he's trying to posit more gun laws == lower mortality from guns, which is kinda lazy. by that standard, if you had just one law - "no guns for anyone" - that should result in high mortality. obviously, that can't be it. maybe there's a laffer curve for gun laws?

:clue:

They base it on a "legislative strength" aspect where they identify 28 possible restrictions, and how many of those restrictions are in place in any given state. So if one bill hit all 28 restrictions (mandated child-safety locks, capacity of 15 or fewer rounds, dealer restrictions, etc), then that state gets 28 points.

You know what this map doesn't support? The somewhat popular theory that that high rates of gun violence correlate with the presence of Darky McGangbanger.

South Dakota teachers can haz guns ?

Teachers are now allowed to bring guns into the classroom in South Dakota.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed House Bill 1087 into law Friday, enabling state school boards to "supervise the arming of school employees" or hire security personnel.

As The New York Times notes, South Dakota is believed to be the first U.S. state to sign such legislation into law.

Rep. Scott Craig (R-Rapid City) and Rep. Betty Olson (R-Prairie City) drafted South Dakota's armed teachers legislation following the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In December, Olson told the Black Hills Pioneer that she "believes arming school personnel could have mitigated the Newtown massacre."

So you hear a window break downstairs and footsteps coming up your steps toward your family..you're all okay waiting for the police to show??

Really?

I own guns, and now that I think about it I haven't killed anyone.

Front Range, dude...
Used to live in a sketchy town...have dogs and guns. Worked overnights, and told the wife if she ever heard anything, set the dog out. Grab the kids and cel phone she keeps bedside, snacth up the 12 gauge with the Surefireattached to it...step into the doorway, shine the light down the hallway while staying low. Chamber a round, and call out loudly that whoever it is can take anything they want, but if they come down the hallway bad **** is going to happen to them.
Never had to execute said plan...

Or, instead of buying thousands of dollars of guns because you think you are going to solve the worlds problems by killing all of the criminals in some kind of clint eastwood one-on-one showdown, you invest in an alarm system that calls 911, security cameras, and the such. Then, even if you are not home and someone tries to break into your house, or even your neighbors house, there is evidence that can be used to prosecute them and a good chance that they might get taken off the street, rather than waiting for them to "creep up at 2am".

Wasn't there a great post by.... MikeD (?) on how to keep your house safe, and that owning a gun was pretty much at the bottom, after dog(s), a sturdy door, security system, etc?

Of course that's for *actually* keeping your family safe, so what am I thinking?

correct. *THIS MAP* does not support such a theory.

do you think it has anything to do w/ lumping all urban data into a state-wide map? you think the risk is the same in griggsville as it is in chicagoland? (http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/il/crime/)
