Hiding from the stupid
This isn't going to be popular on this board but I can't keep it in. The recent shootings at a mall I frequent and an elementary school in CT have brought me to a personal tipping point. I've had it, it's time for serious gun control measures in this country. It's also time to reign in this ridiculous gun culture so many have been fostering. We've tried it the NRAs way and the price for that is simply too high.

I personally own and like guns. I enjoy shooting. I think people have a fundamental right to own guns but nearly everything the NRA has fought for in the last decade is completely nuts. It would be much more effective in the long run as conservation organization and not as an advocacy organization. The pendulum is going to swing back hard and they have brought this upon themselves.

I'm not really interested in hearing the same old tropes. Guns don't kill people. Criminals will get guns anyway. We shouldn't talk about this in the wake of a tragedy. More guns would have prevented the tragedy. We should just enforce the laws we have. Fvck all that. It is time for a sane path forward. Measures won't have the immediate effect of stopping this but that is not an excuse not to do it. It is going to take at least a generation to reverse this situation.

So what would I do? I am not really sure. I don't really come to this as some kind of gun control activist. It seems the following would be a reasonable start.

Background checks for all guns
Assault weapons ban
Ban on large clips and things that facilitate mass murder
Ban on types of bullets that are primarily designed to kill people
Secure storage laws
Repeal laws that allow people to carry in bars, schools etc.
Possible registration laws

Gun ownership can remain a right but it doesn't have to be an unlimited right. There needs to be an appropriate amount of respect and responsibility to go along with ownership.

I hear ya.

I have friends that are 'into' guns. They specially seem to like the assault style weapons. I'll admit, they are fun to shoot. And I've got zero issues with hunting or anything along those lines. But that seems to be the only tangible reason to own one legally (criminals obviously need high firepower.) For some reason though, it seems that once someone buys one, the majority of once reasonable people turn into rambling paranoiacs with delusions of stopping an invading force or defending suburbia from being overrun by the combined US Armed Forces. Most of these guys serious trouble trying to stop a Triple Whopper from invading their guts; they chance of them sliding into their XXL camo and fighting off whatever contingent they are all worked up about this week are zilch. There's just no good reason for the average citizen to have enough firepower to take out a small village, no matter how much fun it might be to play Rambo at the local range on Sunday.

I'm not a gun owner, but I enjoy shooting. All of the gun owners I know are responsible, but I stil don't like the idea of them owning most of the guns they have.

I still don't understand the resistance to gun control. It's not removal. It's control. You register cars. What is wrong with controlling dangerous items??

As George Carlin said, "Think about how dumb the average person is. Half of the people are dumber than that". Especially americans. (paraphrasing). Doesn't it only make sense to keep tabs on that?

I also heard some small blip about a ridiculous disagreement between sports fans that escalated in a shooting and killing today?

Firearms don't operate without human intervention, same with spoons and pencils. But apparently ignorance is the chosen assault weapon lately.

Direction before correction....
Good analogy. I mean firearms are exactly like spoons and pencils. Keep spoons and pencils away from mentally ill people, because you know they are super lethal and can be used to efficiently murder dozens of people.

I actually don't think guns should be banned. I do think there should be highly elevated levels of control. There should be long, mandatory safety classes. There should be thorough mental health screening. There should be a long waiting period (anyone who needs a gun fast needs it for no good reason). There should be many difficult steps required to obtain more powerful weapons. There should be tests given before a license is issued.

You know, same sh1t we do with cars. You can't get a license to drive a car till you prove you won't be a danger to people. You need to go through training and certification to drive bigger vehicles, because the threat is bigger.

Should be the same with guns, only WAAYYYY more stringent and strict.

-- There are 700,000 physicians in the United States.
-- There are 120,000 accidental deaths in the United States caused by physicians every year, and the accidental death percentage per physician is 0.171.
-- There are 80 million gun owners in the United States.
-- There are 1,500 accidental deaths from guns every year, regardless of age group, and the accidental death percentage per gun owner is 0.0000188.

Keep in mind these medical professionals are still trying to save lives.

Alcohol related deaths are tens times larger than violent crimes with firearms but nobody is demanding stricter alcohol laws......

Lest we even need to get into smoking, motor vehicle accidents, knives, or any other inanimate object that you can focus blame on.

Firearms are regulated more than any other object on the planet but yet people will still kill people or themselves with any means possible.

Stop comparing guns with objects that are not designed to kill. It's a weak argument.

Give me something comparable then.......

That's the whole point , firearms don't make the difference, it's the human element
He did. Cars. Our current state of gun laws is like removing licensing, speed limits, stop lights and traffic signs and then being surprised that accident rates go up. Deaths due to mass incidents have gone up 3 fold since the assault weapons ban was allowed to expire. There is one more important statistic. With the death of the kids mother, there is one more person that was killed with their own gun.

If I could be granted one thing as a result of this tragedy, it would actually not be gun control. It would be that every gun owner in America realize their weapons could be used in a horrific manner and take steps to prevent it. It's that they would treat this great power with an appropriate level of responsibility. I hope you keep your sh!t locked up tight.

I do have a serious question. In what way would you be directly affected if all of the items on my list were enacted? What could you not do that you can do now?

My thought....

If you legally procure a weapon and for whatever reason you become separated from said weapon you become financially responsible for the damage it may incur for as long as it usable and traceable to you....

the households where guns were stolen aren't typically known for their financial largess, necessary for owning a proper gun safe

i'm guessing the market for stolen gun safes is pretty tight

It might make my weapon and its state of preparedness illegal. I don't like to blab about it, but I own one pistol.
  • It has a fifteen shot magazine, which might be proscribed by your proposal.
  • It is generally loaded with ammunition which is specifically designed to seriously injure or kill whatever animal it hits.
I do not think that it is unreasonable that I can own and carry this weapon.

My problem isn't with responsible gun owners. It's with the laws that while allowing you to be a responsible gun owner also allow other non-responsible people to own guns. Non-responsible people who allow their guns to be stolen, sell them to criminals, or give them to their f*cking 20 year old nutcase of a son...

As far as I know, existing hardware gets grandfathered in with this type of thing. (no pun intended) I believe they just ban the sale of these items. I wouldn't propose to take anything away from someone who is not mentally ill. You might have to switch bullets.
