All the above i pretty much agree with but some of the rational not so much. If you want to keep people from getting hurt up there you have only two options; wrap the entire mountain in bubble wrap, or make stunts look tuff enough that people will be scared to try them. So far from what i have built i have only seen one person crash hard enough to even note and i believe we were both there to see it and it wasnt that bad. If you want to speak about ecofriendly then i can only bring up a particular trail 6 that has enough lumber to frame a house. I agree we dont want people to get hurt because it will cause trouble but i think your focusing on the wrong aspect of the area. So far the one trail i have seen the most crashes on and by far the most gnarly ones came from no other than PLT which has nearly no stunts on it. So if you really want to keep people from getting injured with out the use of bubble wrap we need to keep trailsheads sealed off so only those who are "in the circle" know where they are (i believe this was your idea). This way out of towners will be shown the trails by locals who know how to ride the stunts and can give advise to those who may not be at that level yet. But if you have some kick ass trail ideas then impliment them or at least share them.

It's not a question of "out of towners". It's about quality trails, stunts, etc. Rickety stuff is not only unsafe, but it doesn't last. You just can't cut/build where-ever you want either. I suggest you ask around to find out about some of the local politics in the area. One-time, and Stiff would be a good start. Don't jepordize everyone's hard work for your own ideas. If you want to do that why don't you go down to NoVa and fix some of Corey's work...or better yet roll up to church and cut your own lines there. I'm sure those guys would be pleased, the same way everyone's pleased with the work up in the Shed.

As far as kick ass trail ideas...I think I've more than implemented them.

Oh yeah: DO NOT make landers on the jump trail. That trail is a multi-use trail, that is traveled by hikers, xc riders, and equines more than us gravity junkies. Landers would be a waste of time. They'd get town down just like the RT.

Well this is getting boring. I was really hoping you would go for the bubble wrap idea.

So are you back from whistler yet and if so where are the pics. You know what they say "if its not on video it didnt happen"

Okay. Obviously there are some different trail building philosphies here. That's fine. But it still doesn't answer my original question:

So, Is it alright to throw some dirt on bucknasty or what?

Also what onetime says about people noticing 'our' trails. (I may have mentioned this in another thread already) I was up hiking near Salamander rock and met a local guy out riding his XC bike. He also spends a lot of time up there hunting and hiking in the winter months. A real multipurpose user of the shed. Anyway, in the course of the conversation he mentioned that he was pissed at the DH riders for "cutting trails on every square-foot of the god-damn mountain" That's just one random person's perspective but food for thought none the less.

i would say that a stunt that falls apart when (properly) ridden and has missing wood and nails sticking out of it is pretty rickety, unsafe and an eyesore. i'm just saying...

Does that include pallets that are leaned precariously up against rocks per chance?

just like 495, it's in our best interest as a group to tear down any shoddy construction. you can build it back up, but if it's subpar, we'll just tear it out again. we need more trail GOONS up there.

How about a... lets help make it correct squad so that pointless wars dont get started. If i see someone tearing down somthing i put my hard work into on a trail i made i can assure you that asswhoopins will be handed out or worse when everyone starts tearing apart everyone elses stunts because they dem them unworthy. I dont mean this as a threat and if you feel the need to tear down my stuff feel free after aug. 20th ill be on my way to WA to stay.

Personally i think this is one of the great things about the shed so far is noone tears down anything but rather builds it up to keep everything rideable. But anyway its aproaching the hour to get on the bike.

The point here is that RIDING is the POINT.

The shed is public domain, anyone who wants to ride or build there can and will. Trying to control it is pointless because these inevitable little skirmishes eventually materialize.

People need encouragement …so why not just be mellow and get people out there? Riding is a great thing and anyone that’s out there trying deserves a chance.

So for the stuff that doesn’t cut the mustard, maybe it can be removed or improved by voluntary consensus??

Just ride it or build it till you can't anymore, I mean hopefully that will never happen but this drama is really boring.

WTF?

...and ride is exactly what a bunch of us were doing right around the time you were posting this. :thumb: speaking of riding... stiff and i will be hitting up (we hope at least 3 of these) bromont, whiteface, plattekill, and diablo over a 4-5 day weekend east coast resort tour. anyone have any recommendations on trails if you've been (we know our way around diablo) and cheap places to stay? we will most likely be leaving this wednesday night and as the procrastinating spontaneous non-planners that we are... we have 2 days to figure things out.

ps: good ride today rm1, onetime, stiff, corey, and _bp. too bad it got dark pretty fast and someone couldn't keep his bike from exploding and burning up.

Hahaha...with a real woman, I'll happily kill a few hours but with only porn as inspiration, I get right to business and rarely prolong the activity beyond the bare minimum needed to achieve ocular rollback. To do otherwise is like wearing a tuxedo for a McDonald's date...much ado about nothing.

I'm thinking of ways to grow the scene. How do these sound?

- Leading "introduction to mountain biking" tours? I'm thinking P-Line and E?
- Selling a big map of all the DH/FR trails?
- Posting trailhead markers on things like Google Earth community?
- Hitting all the forums with massive marketing campaign to bring out of staters to the area. "Freeride Mecca" anyone?
- Contacting the local land manager and taking him on a tour of all the trails to show him how cool it can be.

I think with these simple steps we can have the BESTEST place to ride in the area....short of the resorts.

All good ways to get the whole place closed down. They don't care how cool it could be. As has been said by the City of Frederick (owners of the land) in the past, it's their watershed, they have no interest in turning it into a recreation destination. They've initiated legal action in the past to stop trail maps from being sold. The whole place exists because of a don't ask don't tell agreement. The only officially recognized trail, as I understand it, is the blue trail. All others are technically bootleg trails. It really sucks to hear about something being demolished up there, but I really don't think advertising the place to thousands of others will solve anything.

Sorry. I'm used to this place being a hangout for asshats and blowhards. Nice to see we've got some decent folks back in the forum.

Guess the resort idea won't fly then, eeeeh?

Maybe you should petition Fredneck to install a quality lift??

Make sure it's got a 4 bike/rider capacity cause anything short of that is kiddie stuff...

baaahahahaha

if we could only somehow rig mechanical generators to all the wheels of the XC and road guys at the shed, maybe we could fabricate a fred flintstone primitive lift?

just trying to bridge the gap between all us riders... can't we all just get along?

OK, this is too tempting. Salamander Rock trail is a pirate XC trail (or possibly hiking/hunting access? I don't know... Probably about as long as the combined distance of all hardcore DH tracks in the Shed (I'm not counting piperun and that side). Also, Salamander rock has a lot of trees cut for that trail line - plus it is so poorly designed, lines do not follow the mtn's contour or natural features. Compare to pinik trail which is a great XC trail with good flow and lines that seem to match the lay of the land - which is what good trail building is about.

Hey Steve, what trail are you talking about when you say "pink"? I've heard other people use that term and am quite sure I've ridden it but just know it by a different name. PMs are cool if it's a "down-low"-type trail, though. Where does it cross a road?

If this is the same pink trail I know in the shed, it's the one with the rolling, winding downhill (kind of a roller coaster at times), a couple logs and rockpiles, one steep rutted chute with a log parallel to the trail on the left and then a creek crossing at the end. A very nice downhill IMHO. My buddies and I always called it "pink" because there were pink ribbons on the trees when it was first cut. I probably shouldn't post directions, even though it's pretty easy to find. It's in the north/east side of the shed. PM me if you want more specifics.

yeah this is my understanding too. I love that trail. sometimes I warm up on it on the FR/DH bike as it's a nice 30 minutes uphill then downhill cruise if you start at the Blue trail trailhead on the dirt road on the opposite valley from Fishing Creek (farther away from the "normal"FR spots.
