I think it's Eastre isn't it? The pagan spring fertility holiday?
I think the spelling varies on the pagan you speak to. I've only ever seen it as "Ostara"

http://www.witchvox.com/holidays/ostara/ostarahistory.html

Easter gets its name from the Teutonic goddess of spring and the dawn, whose name is spelled Oestre or Eastre (the origin of the word "east" comes from various Germanic, Austro-Hungarian words for dawn that share the root for the word "aurora" which means " to shine"). Modern pagans have generally accepted the spelling "Ostara" which honors this goddess as our word for the Vernal Equinox. The 1974 edition of Webster's New World Dictionary defines Easter thus: "orig., name of pagan vernal festival almost coincident in date with paschal festival of the church; Eastre, dawn goddess; 1. An annual Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, held on the first Sunday after the date of the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21." The Vernal Equinox usually falls somewhere between March 19th and 22nd (note that the dictionary only mentions March 21st, as opposed to the date of the actual Equinox), and depending upon when the first full moon on or after the Equinox occurs, Easter falls sometime between late-March and mid-April.

And how in the heck did this get associated with the Christian celebreation of Jesus' ressurection???? (BTW I know how, I'm just voicing my frustration at the assimilation of pagan holidays that would have been unheard of in Jesus' day...........anyway)

LOL........nope.

Bad Friday, Good Sunday..........I can't imagine (if I was one of the disciples on that day) what would have been "good" about today.

Was it because the church couldn't stop people from celebrating the pagan holidays so they just associated the holiday with a Christian event??

Yeah that's part of it, it was also easier to get people to "buy into it" if they incorporated some stuff from their former pagan lives.

"yes"

"Good...door on the left. One cross each.....Crucificition?"

"Yes"

"Good. Door on the left. One cross each....Crucifiction?"

"Nope. Freedom! They said I hadn't done anything and so I could go live on an island"

"Well jolly good!"

"No I'm just pulling your leg. Crucifiction"

"Ah good. Door on the left. One cross each..."

Last Easter my cat, Buster Nut-Bag, left the present of two half dead disemboweled baby rabbits. Before I could figure out what to do with the poor things the dog finished them off. I just hope they were not supposed to be a gift for some neighbor kid.

Happy Easter All!

Here is a passage I came across today. I thought I would share it.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours,
no hands but yours,
no feet but yours,

Yours are the eyes through which is to look out Christ's compassion to the world;

Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good;

Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now.

i played an easter gig (3 services at a posh church) at one of these newfangled churches where people close their eyes and make very nazi-esque gestures when they're "feeling the spirit"... apparently this is on the very mild end of "charismatic" religion as well. i thought it was plenty weird.

Yeah charismatics/pentacostals do some "different" things that's for sure - not all I agree with Biblically as well........

However, I will say their music (contemporary of course) tends to be better than a "normal" evangelical church.

let's see if i can unpack your thinking.

it's offensive if i start a thread on gay adoption in anything but the most glowing of terms, but you can freely mock those who are worshipping?

do you need to "come to allah"?

I think a minor difference is that Toshi personally experienced what he was commenting on and how he felt. Before you think I'm defending him, remember, he hates jews ;)

true. however, for a smart kid, he sure says some stupid stuff.

and yes, that comment was very much like "some of my best friends are X", right after disparaging X.

screw it. i don't him, he don't know me, & i'm on his ignore list. the only thing worse than a jew-hater is a roadie who rides custom.

ok, i'll admit it: i looked at your post :D .

yeah, i do have some hangups and skepticism about charismatics and revivalists and the like. this was my first firsthand experience with them, and yes, i could be much more accepting of them. also, as Opie says, revealing my own personal discomfort and prejudices is a different beast than trying to argue about wide-ranging public policy using flawed statistics.

no, he isn't. he got that place of honor for said gay-adoption thread where he took some jabs at me, supposedly in turn for me taking jabs at the (not credible) author of the "study" he cited in the first post.

sounds like good times, good times.

I can't imagine what was said, but it'd have to have been pretty friggin' bad for you to ignore someone.

He's slowly been worming his way back into the PD forum. Maybe he's hoping RM won't notice him. :)
