My grandfather(Navy) met my grandmother in China sometime before WW2. My dad and his sisters were both born there. At the outbreak of WWII Granddad got called back and was captured in one of the first conflicts by the Japanese. He never talked about it, but he may have been on the Battan Death March. Soon after that my dad's family moved to California. Grandma and the aunts were always tight lipped about how they got to China, but the theory is they were Portuguese immigrating to China to escape some civil unrest, but I guess we will never know for sure.
