it says that I can run them with or without clip in pedals, but I wonder if the section of the sole that is plastic will offer poor grip on a flat pedal, compared to a normal trainer. Any thoughts?

I think they mean it would work with toe-straps. Shoes like that are pretty horrible for flats.

You do not want a stiff sole when using flat pedals. Every shoe that I have seen that is SPD compatible is way too stiff to use for flats. The grip will suck.

OK thanks for the advice. I guess there is nothing wrong with standard trainers, I guess I wont be paying for the downhill markup either.
