Girl and I will be in Norcal for about 5 days. (from Oz):rockout: We're looking to head to Tahoe area to ride. Where is the best place to stay as far as riding goes?
Also, where else should we check out for riding? We're bringing our trail bikes (5 & 6") but packing our full face helmets incase we feel like renting big bikes.

I've gotta say, accomodation looks tight for this weekend.

Not sure what weekend you're talking about, but 5 days gives you a good amount of time to ride North Shore, South Shore, a day at Northstar for some DH and a day at Downieville (1 hour North of Truckee).
First off pick up the Tahoe Recreation map (printed in 2008) it has all legal trails for the whole Tahoe area and is only $10 at most bike shops (stop by Sports LTD or Watta Bike if you're in the South Shore first). Trails in the south - don't miss Toads (Saxon Creek) the best way to ride it is from Armstrong Pass up to Rim Trail to Toads and back to Onaidis where your car will be (maybe 3-4 hours, 16 miles, depending). If you're short on time you can ride it from Luther Pass / Big Meadow Trailhead, but you miss a lot of good single track from that way. Also ride Rim Trail from Stagecoach Lodge at Heavenly to Star Lake to Armstong Pass and down to upper and lower Corral (about 25 miles point to point) - amazing trails and views. Or to make that even longer continue to Toads and ride down that instead of Armstong/ Corral Trails. My nomad is perfect for these trails so if you're bringing 5-6" travel bikes you'll be loving it.
For Northstar rent a dh bike and get a lift pass -
At Downieville you'll be good on your trail bikes -

PM if you have any other questions...

We rode Toads today via Amstongs..........Brilliant ride.
Thanks for the tip.
Looking to ride TRT from Tahoe Meadows and Flume trail tomorrow then will be looking for something along the lines of Toads again. Any suggestions?

Great, glad you got that ride it.... good times.

If you ride Flume and TRT from Tahoe Meadow do that as a loop - point to point Flume is not worth it, but linking in some rim trail makes it so much more.

If you have the time and legs are still feeling good I still recommend starting the Rim Trail at Stagecoach Lodge to Star Lake then to Armstong Pass then ride Armstong Trail down to Corral, ride both Corral trails down and then take Trout Creek (called Railroad on the map I think). This is a point to point but you could park one car at the Casinos in town and take the Kingsbury Express bus (stops at the transit center) from there to the top of Kingsbury to shuttle this on your own... check the schedule on the bus though.

A shorter ride but fun, rocky, and flowy and amazing views is called The Bench: Take the Rim Trail from No. Benjamin Street off Kingsbury Grade and ride that out towards Spooner Summit (North) - there's a bench about 6 miles in with amazing views in this high open meadows around 8500' - point to point, maybe 2 hour ride with stops. Flowly like a slightly flatter Toads.

Yes. Stagecoach to Armstong is some fun stuff. Star Lake is beautiful. And you could even stop and do a side trip to hike to the top of Freel Peak.

Last week we brought fishing poles with us on that ride and Ben caught 2 really pretty trout.

Glad you're having fun out there on the trails!

Looks like Stagecoach to Armstrongs tomorrow. :happydance:(it'll be tough to head down Armstrongs and not continue on to Toads for a second helping though.:greedy: )

TRT from Mt Rose to Spooner via Flume today. The first half super fun. The second half super views.

Saturday will depend on legs then something on Sunday and we'll be done. Hole In the Ground also sounds like fun. Too many choices!
