the lever distance adjuster screw on my hayes hydros has stripped. the correct size allen spins in it and the next size up will not fit. what is the common practice for replacing or adjusting after the screw has become stripped? if i remove the lever from the housing to get better access will i need to bleed them afterwards?

You can use a dremel and make the screw sloted for a flat head screw driver. Otherwise I would say you would need to replace that part and I don't know what that involves

As for the HFX-9s you can call up hayes and get a new ball joint screw and they should send it to you for cheap or free. Then all you have to do is unscrew the lever bolts to take the lever off of the cylinder. Next unscrew the lever off of the screw that is stripped. Then you can take some snap ring pliers and undo the snap ring to the washer that holds that screw into a ball joint. Pull the washer and the old screw out and put the new one back in being carefull not to let any air into the cylinder(this will prevent needing to reblead). Put the snap ring back in place and attach the lever again. That should fix your problem.

Go to a shop and ask any of the mechanics if they have any busted Hayes master cylinders. To put in a new one will mean ovverhauling the lever. I used to save busted cyliders for just that reason. Otherwise, bust out the Dremel.
