I recently purchased the hayes disc hfx mag brake kit, but the installation instructions are a little vague. Does anyone know what the little black rubber bushing/washer is for when installing the brakes? And where does it go? By the lever or the caliper?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since the brakes are the last step in completing my new bike. Then maybe I could get my new Ellsworth specialist running after building for about a month.

That looks like the seal between the two halves of the caliper.

There may be another seal like it somewhere else, but that's the only place I've seen a seal like that (in my far-from-exhaustive examinations of hayes brakes).

Did you get a complete bled set? Or was it all in pieces. I doubt its the seat between the caliper halves.

It would help to know what caliper too. The G1 (old school, or G2, new school) I have the G1's and that looks like the seal that goes on the banjo nut on the rear caliper. There should be 2 of them. The banjo nut is what connects the hose to the caliper. There is a hollow bolt that threads into the caliper. Look at this link ( http://www.hayesdiscbrake.com/pdf/CaliperRepair4language45-14573BEnglishWeb.pdf ). Its the first picture on the right. It shows the g1 caliper with the banjo nut, hollow bolt, and 2 seals.

you should download the pdfs from here.....

On the new G2 caliper i think the hose just directly threads in.... I dont know for sure since im still milking the life out of my OLD hayes.....

guys - that washer goes between the hose and the caliper in older g1 style setups. It may also be on G2 setups, but of that I am not certain.

It is NOT a transfer port O ring, they are much smaller and come already installed in the caliper.

When I bought some Hayes Mags unassembled, the hardware kit included (that comes in the partitioned plastic baggie and includes olives and the like) had parts for both HFX-9 and HFX-Mags; makes it simpler for Hayes, I guess, to have one end item in stock than several different ones.

In any case, the Mags didn't use parts from the -9s, and as I recall, that washer might have been one of them.

same here. Including bleed nipples for both types of setups.

There are 2 on the connection to the hose and caliper. If you look at the pic in the PDF you can see how it works.

If its extra and you dont need it Ill pm you my address and maybe you can send it to me. (ill give you a buck) I just lost one in a rush to fix a brake at a race. They sell them through distributors, but i dont want to call to order a 50c part..... Im serious. I need it to fix my spare brake......

There is only 2 on banjo setups, 1 on straight fitting setups.

Just quit bitching and get out there and ride....oh wait a sec.

I think that goes on the end of your finger for added sensitivity.

I found out from my neighbor, a bike tech and semi-pro downhiller that the little black rubber washer goes between the g2 calliper and the brake line. I thought that is where it goes but like I said the instructions were not so clear. Thanks for all the assistance and it was very interesting seeing all the different places that you guys thought it might go.

Thanks again for the help, plan on hitting the streets, dirt jumps and, riding tonight after work.

I second Transcend on that. The O-ring goes on the fitting that's screw in the caliper
