the gustav's i've tried are actually TOO powerful for my tastes. i'm currently running hope m4's & mono6ti's and prefer the range of modulation they offer. i'd find the gustav's were too prone to skidding in tech braking situations (slippery off-cambers, rooty stuff, slimy skinnies, etc). i suppose with more time on them you might get used to the *really* light touch they require. i havent tried the el caminos, but i also prefer the modulation of hayes mags to the maguras...

There is a Reason Hope are called HOPE.........!! ;)

I´m ditching my Mono 6Ti and Mono M4 because they are the worst brakes i´ve had. They look good, bot dont stop you!! I previously had Hayes Mags and may either change back to these or Magura Gustavs, just not decided yet.

I too have traded off 4 piston hopes in favor or hayes mags due to no power, lever coming back to grip on occasion and repeated bleeding by various reputable mechanics to no avail. Hopes suck.

I am interested in looking at the Gustav's due to xy9ine's recomndation about the power they have. Xy9ine, didnt you say that you ran the Gustav caliper with the Hayes Mag lever??

Hey Joel, hoep things are good with you. Those Hopes are not what they should be!

i reckon I´ll give Gustavs a go, and if all fails, I can return to Hayes.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained

Things are real good! thanks,

after looking at the gustav site, http://www.magura.com/english/
the Gustav M is available for 190 or 210 rotors. I have new galfer rotors and dont really want to repurchase.

I'll probably stock with my combo: mag lever, G1caliper, galfer pads & rotors, Goodridge lines (soon), RR levers.

Really, where they broken in? Hope was sending their brakes out with the sinthered pads for a while which don't stop that well especially in dry conditions. Also I've seen them with poor factory bleeds. Bottom line is Hopes are a little finiky and take a little time to set up properly, some people just don't know what they're doing when working on them (not saying you don't) but proper bleeds are important. I didn't care for the way my original sinthered pads stopped, so I changed them to the organic pads and it's night & day.

I used to ride Hayes and switched to the Gustav's last year and love em. I'm running 190 in front and rear. They give great support at the races.

Are you guys talking about the gustav FR brakes??????? I rode a friend of mine's bike a few weeks ago for two runs at bootleg and they felt like cantilever brakes they were so soft. They had so much "modulation" that you could never tell when the pads were on.

Rock what you got. Brakes makes you slow and give you arm pump anyways. I scrub speed on rocks and hikers, its less tiring;)

well... MY mono 6ti's have been perfect out of the box & completely reliable (& powerful) for the entire season i've had them, but yes - the two sets of gustavs i've tried (on buddies bikes) definately had greater innitial bite & overall stopping power. more hayes-like in progression i guess. pretty impressive, but a bit too on/off for my tastes - its just a matter of getting used to the light touch i suppose. (no frankenbrakes - they were stock magura systems.)

I initially thought they were soft, so bled them time and time again, Then i installed EBC pads, broke them in over about 20 miles of dh road riding on v steep gradients, still no better, so I installed a Goodridge hose kit on them. Still no initial bite like i wanted. Then, after having frame and forks faced, spending time and time on setup, they started to squeel like a banshee. Eventually went through the whole of the EBC range of pads before giving up.

Some of the runs down here, are that steep and rocky, that it is essential that you drag both brakes, however when you then need to stop quickly to avoid a tree, the brakes are too weak to stop you properly.

My Hayes were perfect at this, and hence my return to them (but i might just try a bit of Gustav first :thumb:

I don't think there's much wrong with Hopes except I can't find spare parts locally which causes problems. Hayes is about all that the local shops carry for small parts/pads/anything for disc brakes. That or Shimano.

The pads do make a good deal of difference. Hell disc brakes on bikes are just mini-sized car brakes. If you swap just simply pads on a car you can get better grabbing power....with increased brake wear. It's all a up and down. Get good grip and wear the pads out fast or get semi-ok grip and they last a long time. Hayes/Hope/Shimano/Magura whatever........in a 8" rotor setup you should have plenty of "grip" to stop.

That joke about Hope about how you HOPE they work, that was the only thing one of the local shops said about Hope products. I think they work fine and dandy, it's just for me the problem with spare parts and now I've got hayes on 2 bikes makes it expensive to get the right spare parts + a new set of brakes.
