I have a set of (2005?)Hayes El Camino brakes on my clapped to the max DH race machine. Ever since I got them the pin that adjusts the lever reach always comes loose when I am riding. I will fix it at the top of a run, and by the end of the run the lever will be coming all the way into my grip pretty much. I bled the brakes last season and then had a mechanic bleed them because I suck and it still didn't help. Can anyone help me? is it time for a new brakeset? or should i just get rid of em altogether? i heard you don't need brakes when racing dh???:disgust:

A Hayes-sponsored racer I know made the switch to the Stoker and hasn't looked back since.

Take a look at the diagram above from the Hayes website. Part #15 has been updated since 2005 to include a nylon insert to prevent the adjuster from backing out; a cheap and easy fix for your first problem. As for the Anti-Lock feature of the 05' El Camino, do yourself a favor and get a better set of brakes for your DH rig. Good dependable brakes provide control and allow you to ride faster with less fatigue.

Hayes suck, period. I can't wait to get them off my bike for good. with a few months of riding I have gone through two sets of El camino's They had so many problems that hayes ended up not putting out very many and then stopping production period. Make sure you are using Dot4 or Dot 5.1 DO NOT USE Dot 5 it will eat the already sh*tty seals.

Get those brakes off your bike and go for some Avid or Shimano. The only Hayes I have been half happy with are the mechanical disc's on my hardtail.
