I have some of the older HFX 9's withouth the bolts like on the comp. i cant figure out exactly how to remove the retaining washer. i am worried i will breake it, since hayes levers are the most fragile component on my bike. is there some special sort of tool or what? any help would be appreciated.

go to your local bike shop and get them to show you the diagram in their QBP catalog. It shows every part of your brake assembly, so you can see what is going on without breaking something.

Do you mean the lock ring holding the master cylinder in? You can remove the lever without removing that ring. There are 2 hex keyed bolts on the m/c body that you remove and then back the adjuster knob off of the push rod. Reverse process for insertion of new lever.
