I went to bleed my front Hayes Purple brake, set it up VERY nicley, taking my sweet ass time, gettin all the air out of the bleeder hose thing. Ok... time to loosen the zerk fitting (or bleeder screw whatever you want to call it) opened that up and squoze... only nothing happened. That nice thick, solid flow of PURE dot 4 didn't show. It seems like there is something stopping it from flowing. I doooo need a new zerk fitting and am getting that tomorrow, but I don't think the old one would stop the flow. (It was over tightened and that little hole on it was ovalized, but i tested it out and took it off and pumped fluid thru it no probblem) I also pumped fluid thru the brake backwards to see if I could loosen up some dirt of whatever might be in there, and the fluid flowed nice. Tried bleeding from the right end and nothing flowed.

UNTIL I have monies for Hopes, What should I do?

ya my Purples bleed nipple was over tightened cause it would still leak when I pulled the lever hard, also ovaolized(smashed) the hole. I just ground down the point a bit so it would tighten down more, and yes for some reason really really hard to push fluid thru. watch your tube connections with the explosive force needed to push fluid.
After a too long time bleeding I think today I finally got all the little air bubbles out that was causing my lever to pump up a hair. Perhaps something inside our Purples calipers now is damaged causing the hard to push fluid thru.I even tried a new nipple and it was still hard to push fluid, ended up ovalizing that to when I had to snug it back down. Don't know why you can't get any fluid at all to move, mine was a drag."Almost" gave up!
Very strange indeed.... Let me know if you figure it out Sir!
Just adding I had to open the bleed nipple more than the 1/4 turn Hayes suggests to get any flow, maybe like a full turn and still very slow process.....I also was using a syringe with 1/8" tubing.

The bleeding is done from the caliper end to the lever hole... I've bled mine that way and had no problems. Usually I squeeze it before I open the bleeder valve (@ caliper) to force only the fluid through. If you open it, THEN squeeze it, you'll get air in there in no time. Minor difference... but can make a huge difference in terms of brake performance.

I suggest that you pick up a 20 mL syringe AND some plastic hosing at a local hardware store OR pharmacy store. The job is done MUCH easier than that flimsy POS "squirter" that comes with the Hayes bleed kit.

yes, then you can learn all the various setup problems Hopes can have as well.....oh, and make sure they send you the correct pads that work for your new overpriced brakes:sneaky:

Its been tempting to take the two caliper halves apart just to nose around in there.. Will anything horrible happen and will it be hard to put back together?

I always bleed from the caliper to the lever on Hayes, I was just pumpin fluid thru the other way to possibly loosen up some gunk that might have gotten cought in the brake. At six the evening my new bleeder screw will be unpacked and ready to be picked up. I can't wait.

I want to ride... these weekends are few and far between. This one WILL NOT be wasted. :sneaky:

I also split open the calipers, all you see are flat halves with a tiny hole in one and the other halve is relieved around the hole enough for the oring to fit, oring gets smashed between the halves when you screw them back together. You don't see nothing else, maybe if you blew out your pistons you will see something but its probably the side wall of the caliper where the nipple is. You better get a syringe cause that bottle ain't going to have enough force

No... If you take the caliper apart you''ll end up wiyh alot more air to push thru a alredy hard to bleed caliper.. If you notice all we originally did was over tighten the bleed nipple and crushed it together deforming the bleed hole, and possibly widenning the nipple when it was bottomed out in the caliper bottom, thats why I ground the tip half off so it would screw in farther cause it was leaking from the top still. You said it flowed smoothly when you reversed the flow, so I'm still perplexed why we can't push fluid normally.

gotta go online and download the pdf from hayes on bleeding. ( just a note a zerk fitting is the one you would find on a ball joint of a car or some other part that needed to be greased from time to time.
