I have the Hayes HFX-9 hydraulic disc brakes, and whenever I use the reach adjustment screws to increase the reach to the levers, the screws come loose and the levers start moving back in. Is there a way to fix this problem? Would using Loc-Tite on the adjustment screws be a problem? Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated. Thanx.

Hey, I have the same problem with my 9's. You could try loctite, but BE CAREFUL. Put it only on the threads up to where you want the reach, and when you adjust the reach MAKE SURE (I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH) YOU HAVE YOUR ALLEN KEY AS DEEP AS IT WILL GO IN TO THE SCREW.

I had my adjuster split open because I wasn't careful. 3 weeks later I had my brake back from Hayes.

Anyway, I just threw some teflon tape on my threads, I'll try to remember to let you know how that goes at the end of the day today.

spoke prep might do the trick if teflon tape doesn't.

After a run down a trail that would normally bring my levers back to my bars, they stayed put. Only time will tell how long this lasts.. but hell even if it's only 3 rides it's worth it.

It's in the plumbing section.

It is used to seal pipes. When it is put on the threads and screwed on a pipe, it creates a water tight seal (partially because it reduces free-space between the threads, essentially filling any gaps).

Anyone having problems with the lever "poping" out? As in th elever pulls the pushrod out (the peckerhead looking thing at the end of the reach adjustment screw)

There is a c-clip that holds a washer in hat keeps the "peckerhead" ball thing from coming out. You should replace the washer. Its very thin brass. You can get away with a regular hardware store washer, but be shure to file it as thin as the original. If it is too thick, the piston will close off the hole that allows fluid to pass from the piston to the resevoir.

Well the teflon tape died pretty shortly.. 2 rides. That sucks.

I tried loctite. It lasted 2 rides and is gone now too.

These levers just will not stop working their way back. I don't know how to fix it.


Maybe its the rattle in the levers, I dunno.

Bummer. I've been out of town, but I was about to go to the hardware store to buy some teflon tape. I guess I'll try spoke prep. I'll let you know if that works any better than what you tried.

NEVER USE LOCTIGHT!! i made this mistake...it works until you brake a lever and cant get the bolt out to replace the lever...and than you end up buying all new internals for the lever to make it work again...which is what happened to me

Did you use the red Loc Tite? Cuz that stuff's permanent. You should have used the blue stuff. Thanks for the heads-up though.
