I really hadn't paid much attention to the specifics of each format, but once I noticed a side by side comparison of the two, blu-ray kills HD.

Doesn't both have the backing of different movie studios?

As long as a major studio still puts out HD DVD, then the only answer is a dual-format player which is stupidly easy to do and should make the whole subject moot.

HD HVD's last death rattle... no one will carry their offerings and no one will sell the players... it's a dead technology in 18 months.

I believe you, I just think it's dumb.

It's not like they're physically different and we all have dozens of codecs on our PCs for all the formats on the market.

well since Toshiba and Sony are the developers of the two formats i doubt they will make dual players.

I agree. The whole format war business is a pain in my rear. I have been waiting to see who wins before I sink money into it.

and still smarting after the whole BataMax thing..
Porn killed BetaMax. With porn on the interweb now, DVD sales are unaffected by HD formats, so Sony had no major hurdles once they bought off the movie studios and retailers.

I never even thought of that!! You're probably right. My marketing class taught us it was really just better marketing by VHS makers, but I knew it must have been more complex than that.

I heard the internet is hurting the porn industry b/c there is so much out there for free now.

Toshiba Corp is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp, a company source said on Saturday.
It is official.

have you looked at failure rates of Sony cd & dvd players?

I didnt think so. :busted:
None of those use the same laser as Bluray. Xbox 360 is about the same or slightly worse than some of the most failure prone electronics in the industry - laptops (one of the few items were it makes sense to buy extended warranties)

I will give you that numerous first generation Bluray players (and HD DVD) have had software problems but that is not hardware failure.

What are the other ones you reckon? In my experience for digital and video cameras it's useful. Then again I get it for everything here because it's so cheap.
Yes the moving parts are the problems. Zoom lens and tape and later hard drive with their moving parts are failure prone. Video cameras will become more reliable as they switch over to SSD.

Sony had a crappy CCD many vendors used for a while too:

I don't think there's been a video camera built that didn't have something go wrong with it at some point. Perhaps the least durable consumer electronic product available I reckon.

Well its small, has lots of moving parts, and people drop them. Not a good combo.

Yeah in general things you should probably buy the warranty are medium to high priced:

Camcorder, Camera, Laptop, and rear projection TVs.

Though a lot of those extended warranties they sell you at the store are a scam. Most other products don't need it.

Various kitchen appliance are a headache too...
