Being that steerer tubes are generally "standard" now, are different brands all using the same bearings? My FSA got really strange on me recently, so I'd like to put in new bearings. But do I have to use "their" bearings or are, say CC the same dimensions? While we're here, how about the race on the steerer tube? Same? Different? Or are these all universal now?

They are not all the same, some use different angles on the bearings and there are a bunch of different head tube sizes which mean different bearing sizes.

The od, id and angle on the bearings can all be different, easiest way to work it out is take the old ones out and read the size off the side of the bearing if it's still legible, or measure if not.

FSA is actually pretty good about this. Go to their HP, click on the service manual and you get a drawing of the headset that contains the bearing specs. Use that to either order a replacement from FSA or your favorite bearing vendor.
