When you install a new headset, do you use the proper technique and use a headset reamer and then a press? I usually use my big friendly hammer (BFH) and pound them in (the races), and I've never had any trouble yet. I'm building a new bike that I'll have quite a bit of money in, and I want to do it right. What do you think?

You may not need to ream it, depending on the frame. (Take it to a pro to check out, just to be sure if you want.) Definitely use a headset cup press instead of a hammer, if you've got a nice frame & headset that you want to keep nice. You can get real uneven with a hammer, not to mention the potential for damage.

For a couple bucks at the hardware store you can make a press.

Just get a long 1/2 bolt (10-12")

A variety of washers built up to one bigger than the headset cups.

Then use a bolt and a a wrench as the lever and bingo you have a headset press...

You can find some plasticote stuff to apply on the washers to avoid scratching the cups, although I never had a problem with scratching...
