My setup (keep in mind I'm a mechanics idiot)

I have a 05 ASX (1.5 headtube) and am using a 04 Super T (1-1/8) with a FSA Pig headset.

I developed some play in the headset today while riding. When I came home I noticed that when I turned the fork I could hear the grinding of dirt in the headset area. I removed the bolt which runs down the steer tube and pulled the fork out of the headtube. I whipped everything down. Upon reassembly I had some minor issues getting everything back together tightly. Being the mechanical dolt that I am, I overtightened the bolt into the starnut (thinking it would help pull everything together) and ripped the center of the starnut right out..

So I'm asking for a few things. The headset I'm using.. is it a 1.5 sized headset with some kind of reducer to fit the Super T fork? If I needed to purchase a new headset I would go for the 1.5 size?

I've read about the Azonic Headlock?, should I bang out the old starnut and use the headlock?

What kind of headset you have depends on your setup. The question is, do the cups that hold the bearings sit approximately equal to (or extend beyond) the outside diameter of the headtube? If the answer is yes, then you have a 1.5" reducing headset, which is a good thing. If the answer is no, then you have a 1 1/8" headset, pressed into a set of reducer cups, pressed into the headtube - which is not as ideal a setup.

If you do buy a new headset, go with a 1.5" reducing headset. Cane Creek XXc is a reducing headset, and one of the FSA Orbit headsets works the same way. I believe they make a pig like that, too - the key is that it's a 1.5" headset that accepts a 1 1/8" fork.

In answer to your second question, yes, just pound out that star nut and go with an Azonic Headlock. You'll wonder why you ever bothered with star nuts in the first place.
