so my girlfrind has what looks like a '99 hardrock sport that is brandnew. It appears to have a 1-1/8 threaded steerer. Its too fat to be a 1inch, unless the headtube is rediculously thick. first question, does what i'm talking about even exist, and second, can i press it out and put a regualr 1-1/8th threadless headset in?

Are you sure it's threaded? I have seen the '99 hardrock and it came with a threadless headset. But there are 1-1/8" threaded headsets out there so that might be a possibility also. Why do you want to switch from threaded to threadless? Unless you change steerer tubes (or forks) I think you have to use a threaded headset, I could be wrong though.

i wanted to swap the headset to install a 90mm marzochhi z.5 that I have layin around. It might be older than 99... it's a hardrock sport, bright yellow and black. The thing barely has any chainslap even, it's mint.

All you would need is a new headset.

It might be the dreaded 1-1/4" threaded.
