A buddy of mine is selling an 01 F550 with the 7.3 liter diesel. its got 100k miles. I’ve been looking at a new work truck, but don’t know much about diesels.

Are these trucks any good?

7.3 is the one you want. Non turbo will be a dog.

That’s a good truck, but it’s a real truck.

What do you do for work, and does it require hauling enough crap to actually make the suspension squish on that thing? I had a 2017 f550 as a work truck at my previous job, and usually just had my laptop a roll of prints and lunch in it, it may as well have not had suspension. No clue why they bought me an $80k work truck when a Prius would have done the job just fine, but it was handy when I bought two pallets of sod for my backyard.

Not sure what stateyou’re in and how they figure out registration fees, but in Ca it’s based of max GVW so a 550 is like eleventy million dollars to register every year.

I’m in so-cal. It’s the nasty new laws that is making it cheap to buy. It will be registered as non commercial. 80% of the time I work from home, but from time to I need to haul 2200 lb pallets. My Yukon 1500 doesn’t like it, so I’m looking at this F550 because it’s cheap, and I could carry more than 1 pallet at a time...

My parents had a 550 to tow their RV, they did not like it. Didn't come with a lot of the interior stuff they were expecting. Mileage was something like 11, but only dropped to 10 when towing god knows how many tens of thousands of pounds. It got real hard to sell too, they had a hell of a time getting rid of it. It seemed to be very specialized for towing, but not much else.

It is almost as though very few people use trucks for towing/hauling things.

Yup. This is a single cab. No A/C, etc. Work truck only. I would keep my Yukon for taking the family places.

The 7.3L is about as good as it gets for pre-emissions diesel engines.

That F550 on the other hand will kick like a rodeo bull unladen. Take it for a test ride and see if you can live with it. My wife hates riding in my 2017 Ram 3500, and the newer crop of HD trucks are friendlier than those of old.

Ever considered getting a utility trailer? It'll hurt your wallet less and can be pulled along with your current truck.

On second thought, fuck it. Put dual stacks on that bitch, 40s, and roll coal everywhere you go. Screw the haters and losers.

Turbo will be a dog too, but will run forever.
My brothers ranch truck, also used to pull nieces horses to rodeo's all over west, has 300k+ on it.

Thanks for the replies!

I’ve thought about a utility trailer, but have no where to put it. At least another vehicle can be easily moved. This particular truck has a utility body and rack on it, so those may help the ride a little. I need to see what the smog and registration/insurance costs are and then take it from there...

I could most likely get it for $4k...

If and only if it can be registered and smogged in CA, as Eric notes, I’d pick that up for $4k if I were you.

I had a '00 F350 with a 7.3 in it. I ran B99 in it 9 months out of the year and B50 in winter. I averaged almost 20mpg. I am not a Ford guy, but that truck was perfect. The 7.3 is a great motor.

The trans in a 550 kicks the mpg way down IME.

Ours is a 2016. Good truck. Its our Camp Truck and Toy Hauler. It is confidence inspiring. Our access road is seasonal at best. Hauls a trailer to the top of the hill no problem. Plows through drifts no problem. Its a beast.

He ended up selling it to another of his buddies that needed it for work.

Which ended up being better for me anyways...
