My parents had a 550 to tow their RV, they did not like it. Didn't come with a lot of the interior stuff they were expecting. Mileage was something like 11, but only dropped to 10 when towing god knows how many tens of thousands of pounds. It got real hard to sell too, they had a hell of a time getting rid of it. It seemed to be very specialized for towing, but not much else.A buddy of mine is selling an 01 F550 with the 7.3 liter diesel. its got 100k miles. I’ve been looking at a new work truck, but don’t know much about diesels.
Are these trucks any good?

fifyIt is almost as though very few city people use trucks for towing/hauling things.
Yup. This is a single cab. No A/C, etc. Work truck only. I would keep my Yukon for taking the family places. My parents had a 550 to tow their RV, they did not like it. Didn't come with a lot of the interior stuff they were expecting.
Turbo will be a dog too, but will run forever.7.3 is the one you want. Non turbo will be a dog.
The trans in a 550 kicks the mpg way down IME.I had a '00 F350 with a 7.3 in it. I ran B99 in it 9 months out of the year and B50 in winter. I averaged almost 20mpg. I am not a Ford guy, but that truck was perfect. The 7.3 is a great motor.
hell I would pick it up and sell it out of state in a heart beat at that price. someone on the FB Truck Camping Board would offer you over 10k in five minutesIf and only if it can be registered and smogged in CA, as Eric notes, I’d pick that up for $4k if I were you.
I drove a F450 4x4 tow truck a few times, but never ran the mileage. I have never messed with a F550.The trans in a 550 kicks the mpg way down IME.
That thing is awesome.Threads with out pics are not as fun....View attachment 139831
Nomenclature is totally arbitrary when one can buy a F-250 with a 1333 payload* or a F-150 with a 2852. (Although most F-150s on the road are in the 1700-1800 payload range.)I think it’s a 2-1/2 ton, but I’m not sure.
Ours is a 2016. Good truck. Its our Camp Truck and Toy Hauler. It is confidence inspiring. Our access road is seasonal at best. Hauls a trailer to the top of the hill no problem. Plows through drifts no problem. Its a beast.A buddy of mine is selling an 01 F550 with the 7.3 liter diesel. its got 100k miles.
