So... If I'm reading your logic correctly, all someone has to do is make a threat when something is said that they don't like, and all of a sudden what was said becomes illegal because it's "provoking violence" ?
You could make the argument that speech during civil rights movement provoked violence against blacks... should it not have been protected?

These guys have every right to do what they're (allegedly) doing.

I got your point the first time. Just trying to clarify my logic to you since you asked.

"We are not hateful toward Muslims. We are not aiming this at Muslims, we are aiming this at Sharia law."
What a load of sh*t that is. There's no other way to take that than hate towards Muslims, all of them for that matter since it's their holy book.......not just the nutjobs that want us all dead.

If you burned a copy of the Bible, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think that Christians would think you hate them.

You know. My opinion of these cave-dwelling encino men would do a complete 180 if they fired up their logs and Korans and then threw a big old pot on top of the fire and started cooking some spaghetti and meatballs in honor of FSM.

But seriously, lets say these dolts follow through with this and get their Fahrenheit 451 on. I really don't think it would be that far fetched for there to be some sort of retaliation directly against this church or some of its members. If this were to happen, what should our governments role be in capturing and prosecuting those responsible for these hypothetical crimes? On one hand, I feel that nobody should be left out from under the freedom of speech umbrella despite how idiotic their actions may be, however I can't help but fear that our government (probably thanks to W/Cheney) would deploy military tactics which would only result in escalation.

Can I get an Amen!? Hallelujah my brothers!

*edit, as an aside, I think the bigger picture here is that history has shown that any one named "Rev. Jones" should immediately be placed under lock and key.

If something was to happen, it should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The people who have already made (the alleged) death threats should also be prosecuted.

So you would be fine with say the Patriot Act being imposed, renditions, or the use of the military on foreign soils??

I'm not trying to argue your point, it's just that "the fullest extent of the law" seems to cover a little more than what one would have thought a couple decades ago and I'm not terribly confident in the government handling a potential "situation" or policing it correctly.

Like I alluded to, my feelings may be due to how the last regime handled things...

No, not at all.

By fullest extent of the law, I mean sheriff Bubba in Florida putting down his Subway and Busch lunch and doing a little actual looking into the threats.

I don't mean kidnapping and torturing people. Ever. Even guilty ones.

Don't be stupid. There is a clear line between burning a book and threatening harm. Sorry if you were being sarcastic.

You guys do realize that people all over the world have their panties up their a$$ in one way or another over 12 loonies in Florida

Turns out the pastor has been thrown out of church in the past in Germany by the congregation..... who were upset at his "Hate filled" sermons.

He sounds like such a winner!

US fundamentalist pastor Terry Jones, who wants to burn copies of the Koran on Sept. 11, ran a church in the western German city of Cologne until last year when members of the congregation expelled him. Former members have spoken of his hate-filled sermons and insistence on "blind obedience."

After reading the story on him I can see this guy setting up a lil village somewhere in central/south america......

Which you read into it. What I said is that I don't care if an act of free speech harms US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. That's because I value free speech, not that I want a car bomb to go off in a market and take out a bunch of troops and assorted other civilian casualties.

What I did say is that Generalissmo Petraeus can and should be told to fvck off at every opportunity for trying to repeatedly make a cheap argument right out of the book of corrupt military leaders the world over. Take it up with him, he's the one waving you guys around like a fuzzy kitten.

edit: Think of it this way? You know Rev. Lovejoy's wife on the Simpsons, the one who always screams, "Won't someone think of the children!!!???" Petraeus is essentially doing the same thing. If someone says to Mrs. Lovejoy, "Fvck the kids!" does that mean that they actually want to physically rape the children?
Okay, how about this...what if Petraeus said something along the lines of "Burn them ****s, lets get it on!"
I am down w/ free speech, its one of the reasons I do what I do. But if you are not saying fvck the troops, what are saying? If its fvck Petraues, say so. I felt his reaction was very appropriate. An act like burning a chunk of paper cold inflame a big chunk of the world that has recently began to somewhat settle down. And that in turn can cause alot of young kids alot of pain or worse...

That simple act of free speech would harm alot more than that.

JohnE, while I agree with what you said, I have to say that the General would have been better off to side with military custom and not vocalize on a matter of state that should have been addressed by the appropriate agency first.

That being said, hopefully most understand the essence of military leadership he was exercising by stating it as a concern for his troops, which you, I and other military folks know, but is portrayed in the media as him being a political instrument and not the heart of what he is, a combat leader.

I think this book burning is going to piss off some people, more then just the extreme folks.

Someone needs to have a 'church burning' and it sounds like florida is a good place to start.

You're really wondering?

It would have been the same. "Fvck off, retire, hang up the uniform, and become a politician or a pundit."
I think you just dont like the military...did you lose a girl to a serviceman somewhere along the line? A guy? Had your ass kicked by a guy in uniform?

Screw it. I am going to burn a Koran, a Bible, a Torah, the Tao te Ching, my "Everyday Buddah" book, all my old baseball cards and the tv guide, along with any other text I can find that sheep follow mindlessly. I am going to piss off everyone.

I don't mind hugely when people afflicted with religion beat, shoot, murder, stab, rape persecute each other.... just Darwin at work as far as I'm concerned. But I do get pissed off when these willfully delusional retards drag us peace loving atheists into their sad little psychotic power trips.
