Helmet protection compromised?

I totally understand the importance of a helemt, and i have a 661 full bravo, but my head has gotten bigger, and i had to take out the padding in it so my head will fit, just the foam, not the styrofoam. Is this compromissing and protection, as my head is just touching the cement hard styrofoam? Is it time to buy a new full face or what?

I saw some one on this forum with a pretty badly bruised forehead and he had like 2 inches of padding, and i have none. :thumb:

I don't think the soft foam is totally necessary but I'm sure it would make the helmet more comfortable. One could argue that the less distance between the styrofoam and your head the less your head will rattle around inside the helmet in a crash. I'd say do whatever you want.

Quite possibly it will hurt a bit more in a crash, you are losing a slight bit of padding but that little bit makes things a lot more comfortable... Would you rather bash your head off a wooden plank, or a plank wrapped in a blanket?

I agree the padding makes it comfy and the styrofoam gives the impact protection, but consider this your skin is less likely to be cut if there is something soft between it and the hard styrofoam. So what may have been a bruise only could become a cut needing stitches.

One from the left field, get a haircut. You'd be amazed how much difference a shaved head makes to the fit of your helmet. A good mop can add half inch or so round.

10 bucks says that if you have the model with the 'cap' pad, you can simply rearrange it so it fits. If the pads arent located right in my Bravo, the helmet doesnt fit me either.

well, unless your head got super huge, then just get a new one that fits right, or mod the pads....

I will give you my two cents on this topic since I have had 8 concussions as well as 4 catscans during my riding/DH career. I have always worn Troy Lee D2 carbons because they were the sh$t! Unfortunatly that type of helmet and so many others that are on the market(661,etc.....) may lighten the blow of impact or save your pretty face from a scratch or two, but they don't do a good job at truly protecting your head from serious injury! I have switched after my last concussion to using a DOT-SNELL certified mx helmet. I put my new Oneal 904 against my TLD carbon, and the difference in weight was only a mere 7 ounces more. Now if I crash I have a way better chance of not permanently being retarded. If you are racing DH or just doing big stuff on your bike it is worth checking into one of these helmets. They cost a bit more than your standard MTB fullface, but they are as light, look even better, and offer three times the protection! Don't mess with removing any padding. Bad idea!

The soft padding protects your head from minor bangs and dings, right now you're more likely to feel a small impact more than you would with the padding in. Maybe some more goosebumps and stuff. As a retailer I have to recommend using your padding, it's pretty important to maximizing the function of the helmet. I'd say drop the cash to buy a new one, your helmet encases some important equipment.

If your head is shaved and you have no padding, it's even worse. Hair would provide a slight bit of padding, if the styrofoam is directly in contact with skin then you could be in for some extra hurtin'

HAHA no Im poor, for exactly that reason. That a azonic is a good deal, find one to try and do it if a medium works for you. Seriously if theres one thing you shouldn't skimp on, its your helmet.

well ive ridden both helmets. i rode the azx for over a year and i like it alot. its really nice padding but it has poor ventilation. only vents it has are those 2 in the front and 2 tiny ones that u can open and close underneath the visor. right now i ride a full bravo carbon. wich is same as urs but in carbon fiber and i must say it vents waaay better and i just like the all around feel of it. the azx is great but if you fit into a med full bravo u might wanna get a large azx cuz it fits small

I feel your pain about the money but buying 2nd hand protection equipement is pretty dodgy too in my opinion..............you just dont know what that helmets been through (probably in perfect condition but its a big risk to take)

For many of the same reasons I also recommend a DOT/Snell certified helmet. I personaly use a FLY Lite helmet and it is super comfy, not to heavy and the prices plus grafic are very nice. A couple of years ago I used the 661 (nice bike helmet) and fall at speed or into trees and rocks it just wasn't enough. I raced motos in my younger days and I didn't get my melon rung as bad then as I did in the bike helmet so I went back to DOT/Snell certified moto helmets. It's a good thing I did cause about 3 weeks later I got slammed hard. I was spinny for a couple of days but never blacked out. I am certain that had I been wearing the 661 I would have been unconsious and far worse off in the following days. FLY Racing :thumb:
