Just to be safe, I backup the entire "Documents ans Settings" folder when I do anything major. Then I know that I got all the email, bookmark, etc, files. Most important if there are more than a couple logins. (I don't trust myself to remember every little file)

I toss it on an external drive. Then I can pick and choose the files to put back on the new installation. It'll sit there for awhile till I'm sure I got everything, then I delete it.

muhuhuhahahahaha! the beast is alive! up and running...now i just have to deal with all of the updates (sp2/3) and all of that jazz. i'll reload my docs after work tonight but so far so good i already ditched IE for firefox and the net is running much smoother as well.

thanks for all the help guys...i feel like a complete idiot now but at least i learned a lot in troubleshooting this thing.
